SUMMARY:Tuesday Night Book Group: Sunday In-Person Spring Series
DESCRIPTION:Abandonment to the will of God is the goal of the Christian life.  And yet\, surrendering everything over to God remains very difficult for the vast majority of us.  What we need to realize is that while giving ourselves over to God’s perfect will is absolutely necessary\, it’s a gradual\, step-by-step process of growth. \nJoin the Tuesday Night Book Group to discuss what’s been called “The Secret of Peace and Happiness”:  Total Abandonment to God’s Will. \nIf you’re joining us for the first time\, you can catch up on the previous video lessons in the series free via ScienceOfSainthood.com before April 16th. We’ll be finishing the series by watching and discussing Lessons 8\, 9\, and 10 together. \nOur study has been supplemented by handouts featuring select passages from three spiritual classics: \n– Abandonment to Divine Providence by Fr. Jean-Pierre de Caussade\, S.J.\n– Trustful Surrender to Divine Providence by Fr. Jean Baptiste Saint Jure\, S.J.\, and St. Claude de la Colombiere\, S.J.\n– Into Your Hands\, Father: Abandoning Ourselves to the God Who Loves Us by Wilfrid Stinissen. \nRegistration is required\, as in-person participation is limited to 15 people (free workbook to be provided). \nTo register to attend and to receive details\, please email tuesdaynightbookgroup@gmail.com with “God’s Will” in the subject line.

SUMMARY:Book Launch: Just Church
DESCRIPTION:Just Church\nTuesday\, May 16th at 7 PM\nWallace Hall \nSpeaker: Dr. Phyllis Zagano \nPhyllis Zagano is an internationally acclaimed Catholic scholar and lecturer on contemporary spirituality and women’s issues in the church. Pope Francis appointed her to the Papal Commission for the Study of Women in the Diaconate\, which convened in Rome in 2016. \nHer new book Just Church reviews Catholic social teaching and modern synods in relation to current and prospective ministry by women. With an eye to the intersection of synodality and women’s concerns\, Dr. Zagano argues for an increased presence of women in the apostolic\, liturgical\, and governance sectors of the Church and\, in this vein\, the ordination of women to the diaconate.

SUMMARY:Tuesday Night Book Group | Saturday Midday Retreat: Talk on Saint Padre Pio
DESCRIPTION:Join members of the Tuesday Night Book Group on a Saturday Midday Retreat in Manhattan to hear a one-hour talk on Saint Padre Pio (1887-1968)\, the Italian Franciscan Capuchin friar\, priest\, and mystic famous for his balance of compassion and “tough love\,” and for his insistence on hope-filled prayer\, passionate love of the Eucharist\, and devoted hearing of Confessions for many hours a day. In addition to the stigmata\, other miraculous gifts attributed to him include healing and the reading of souls. \nAt 1 PM\, we will be led in a guided meditation based on passages from Saint Pio’s writings. At 3 PM\, there will be an informal social hour with light refreshments. This day of retreat will help us to remember Padre Pio’s advice: “Pray\, hope\, and don’t worry. SUMMARY:Tuesday Night Book Group: Saturday Midday Retreat
DESCRIPTION:Join the Tuesday Night Book Group on a Saturday Midday Retreat in Manhattan to hear two 30-minute talks on The Union of the Intellect and the Heart by Fr. James Brent (Ph.D.\, St. Louis University) of the Thomistic Institute’s popular “Aquinas 101” series and Fr. Bruno Shah (Ph.D.\, Notre Dame) of Providence College.  From 1-3 PM\, we will be led in a guided meditation before the Blessed Sacrament.  \nThere’s a dimension of prayer life\, of our hearts\, that lies hidden and secret\, perhaps even to ourselves. It is our original solitude—that intimate private consciousness between God and the individual. \nIn his humanity\, the Lord Jesus must have himself experienced this secret core to his spiritual life and sacred heart. He would often retreat to a private place to pray to the Father\, so when he teaches us how to pray\, it really is an amazing revelation! He’s letting us in on the secret of his trinitarian life. He’s revealing the heart of his absolute trust in the Father\, a human trust that is at the same time perfectly energized by his own eternal divinity. \nDuring our Retreat\, may the secret of our spiritual identity hidden with Christ in God be discerned and deepened through the spirit of prayer\, and may his Spirit anoint us to pray as Jesus taught us so that our heavenly Father’s kingdom expands into our hearts. \nTo register to attend (there is no cost) and to receive details (please note that we will be meeting off-site)\, please email “August 19th Retreat” to tuesdaynightbookgroup@gmail.com.\n\nAll are welcome.

SUMMARY:Tuesday Night Book Group: C.S. Lewis and the Doctrine of Deification
DESCRIPTION:During his September 2023 talk at Harvard University\, Bishop Robert Barron was asked about the Christian process of divinization (or deification\, and known in the Orthodox tradition as theosis)\, and told the crowd that his remarks could be summed up in the simple words of St. Irenaeus: “The glory of God is a human being fully alive.” \nChris Jensen’s luminous essay “Shine As the Sun:  C.S. Lewis and the Doctrine of Deification”—which was first presented at the C.S. Lewis Summer Institute at Oxford University\, and can be found online at cslewis.org—expands on Lewis’s insights into this inward process of transformation experienced within the life of the Church and leading to mystical union with God. \nNote: Chris Jensen will be joining us for the October 24th meeting. \nJoin the Tuesday Night Book Group as they read and discuss Jensen’s essay and C.S. Lewis’s beliefs regarding deification and Lewis’s personal spiritual practices which included prayer (esp. the Psalms and daily lectio divina on the New Testament)\, fasting\, receiving spiritual direction\, and the sacraments—especially the Eucharist. Lewis wrote that our destiny in life is either to be like God—or to be miserable; there is no middle way: “If we will not learn to eat the only food that the universe grows…then we must starve eternally.” \nOptional supplemental reading includes Paragraph 2014 of the Catechism of the Catholic Church; Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis; and With All the Fullness of God: Deification in Christian Tradition\, edited by Jared Ortiz. \nAll are welcome. To receive the new Zoom link for this series\, RSVP with the subject line “C.S. Lewis” to tuesdaynightbookgroup@gmail.com.

SUMMARY:Tuesday Night Book Group: The Surprising Rebirth of Belief in God
DESCRIPTION:A longtime atheist psychologist cited as “the most influential public intellectual in the Western world” has also been called “the person most responsible for reintroducing God and the Bible into mainstream secular culture today\,” prompting many to leave behind secularism and reconsider Christianity. Other high-profile conversions (including atheist-turned-Catholic standup comic Jen Fulwiler and actor Matthew Perry\, whose memoir featured his heartfelt account of a mystical encounter with God)\, not to mention peer-reviewed medical studies of near-death experiences have been bringing matters of God and the afterlife front and center. \nCould we be witnessing a return of belief in our generation? Drawing from the worlds of C.S. Lewis\, contemporary culture\, consciousness\, philosophy\, poetry\, science\, and technology\, as well as from 15 years of interviews as a popular radio and podcast host\, author Justin Brierley argues a resounding “yes”—stating that “the church needs to be a place of countercultural grace in a polarized\, moralistic\, and unforgiving society.” \nJoin the Tuesday Night Book Group in reading and discussing Brierley’s new book The Surprising Rebirth of Belief in God: Why New Atheism Grew Old and Secular Thinkers are Considering Christianity Again\, which Bishop Barron deemed “excellent” in announcing plans for a series of YouTube talks on the book\, which promises to provide “food for thought” with loved ones at Thanksgiving and Christmas gatherings. \nAs the discussion of each chapter is self-contained\, everyone is welcome and free to join at any time for one or more sessions of this series. \nUpcoming Sessions: \nTuesday\, November 7th | The Rise and Fall of New Atheism (discussion of chapter + linked video)\nTuesday\, November 14th | The New Conversation on God\nTuesday\, November 21st | Shaped by the Christian Story\nTuesday\, November 28th | Rediscovering the Bible\nTuesday\, December 5th | The Alternative Story of Science\nTuesday\, December 12th | Mind\, Meaning\, and the Materialists\nTuesday\, December 19th | The Surprising Rebirth of Belief in God \nOptional Supplemental Reading: Yes\, There is a God by John Bergsma\, Ph.D.\, and Science at the Doorstep to God: Science and Reason in Support of God\, the Soul\, and Life After Death by Fr. Robert Spitzer\, SJ\, Ph.D. \nTo receive the new Zoom link for this series\, RSVP with the subject line “REBIRTH OF BELIEF” to tuesdaynightbookgroup@gmail.com.

SUMMARY:Tuesday Night Book Group: The Discernment of Spirits: An Ignatian Guide for Everyday Living by Fr. Timothy Gallagher
DESCRIPTION:“Spiritual discernment is the art of finding God’s will for us in the concrete life situations that confront us each day.  It is the link between prayer and action.” \nWhat can St. Ignatius Loyola teach us about the discernment of spirits—also called “motions of the soul” or interior movements (thoughts\, imaginings\, emotions\, inclinations\, desires\, feelings\, repulsions\, and attractions)—that lies at the very heart of Christian life? \nIn his classic book The Discernment of Spirits: An Ignatian Guide for Everyday Living\, Fr. Timothy Gallagher helps us understand the Rules and how their insights are essential for our spiritual growth today. By integrating the Rules and the experience of contemporary people\, Gallagher shows the precision\, clarity\, and insight of Ignatius’s Rules\, as well as the relevance of his thought for spiritual life. When we learn to read St. Ignatius correctly\, we discover in his remarkable words our own struggles\, joys\, and triumphs. \nThe Tuesday Night Book Group’s six-week series discussing this book is for all who desire greater awareness of God’s action in their daily spiritual lives.  This series will be led by Robert Giugliano\, Ph.D.\, a psychologist and longtime Ignatian spiritual director and adjunct faculty member at Fordham. \nWe will explore both theory and practice as embodied in St. Ignatius of Loyola’s 14 Rules for the Discernment of Spirits contained in his Spiritual Exercises\, which provide one of the clearest and most comprehensive explanations of the discernment of spirits in the Christian spiritual tradition. \nDiscussions begin at 7 PM and typically run 75-90 minutes. \nUpcoming Sessions\nTues\, Jan. 23:  Foundations and Perspective\nTues\, Jan. 30:  Discernment Definition and Foundation\, and Rules 1-4\nTues\, Feb. 6:  Rules 5-7\nTues\, Feb. 13:  Rules 8-11\nTues\, Feb. 20:  Rules 12-14\nTues\, Feb. 27:  Application of the Rules\, and Q&A \nRecommended text:  Fr.
