SUMMARY:I Believe in Love: A Personal Retreat Based On the Teachings of St. Therese of Lisieux by Fr. Jean C.J. D’Elbee
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, November 1st to Tuesday\, January 17th at 7 PM\nOn Zoom\nThough she died at age 24\, St. Therese of Lisieux’s contributions have been so remarkable that she was named one of only 37 Doctors of the Church\, and one of only 4 women among them. At first glance\, many have made the mistake of dismissing her writings as “overly sentimental\,” but countless intellectuals (including Dorothy Day\, Thomas Merton\, Jacques Philippe\, and Edith Stein) have returned to a deeper examination of her work to deem her a warrior—“though her battles are for love by means of love\, for peace by means of peace\,” in the words of Hans Urs von Balthasar. \nLikewise\, Bishop Robert Barron began to see Therese as she was: a rather “tough cookie” who\, because humility is truth\, understood who she was in the sight of God and worked within that grace with a pragmatic directness that came to define her “Little Way”: a willingness to\, in every moment\, in every situation\, ask the central question of surrender—What is the demand of love?—and then choose it. \nA spiritual classic\, I Believe in Love has long been beloved for its wondrous distillation of the teachings of St. Therese into a reader-friendly set of 10 meditations\, and as an invaluable companion along our journey to union with God. \nAuthor Fr. Jean C.J. D’Elbee was a French priest who beautifully conveys in this book the spirit of St. Therese and her message of joyful confidence and total abandonment to the Heart of Jesus. \nThis series will be co-led by Karen Page with Robert Giugliano\, Ph.D.\, longtime psychologist\, spiritual director\, and former Fordham adjunct faculty member who wrote his master’s dissertation on St. Therese of Lisieux. \nTo receive the Zoom link for this series\, email TuesdayNightBookGroup@gmail.com. \nSCHEDULE\nTuesday\, November 1 | Conference 1: Love for Love \nTuesday\, November 8 | Conference 2: Humble Confidence \nTuesday\, November 15 | Conference 3: Unshakable Confidence \nTuesday\, November 22 | Conference 4: Abandonment to Jesus \nTuesday\, December 6 | Conference 5: Great Desires\, Humility\, and Peace \nTuesday\, December 13 | Conference 6: Fraternal Charity \nTuesday\, December 20 | Conference 7: The Apostolate \nTuesday\, January 3 | Conference 8: The Cross \nTuesday\, January 10 | Conference 9: The Eucharist \nTuesday\, January 17 | Conference 10: Jesus\, Mary\, and the Saints

SUMMARY:Concert: Scott Dettra\, organ: Cesar Franck Bicentennial—The Complete Organ Works (Part 2)
DESCRIPTION:N.P. Mander Organ Recital Series \nTHIS IS PART TWO OF TWO CONCERTS. The first half of the program will be performed in Part 1 and the second half of the program will be performed the next night in Part 2. Tickets to each part are sold separately. \nIn celebration of César Franck’s bicentennial in 2022\, American concert organist Scott Dettra will undertake an international tour of Franck’s 12 major organ works\, performed from memory in two 75-minute recitals on consecutive evenings. Franck’s organ music—arguably the most significant contribution to the repertoire after that of Bach—broke new ground and charted the course of the French Romantic organ school. Thanks to his mature harmonic language and ability to write achingly beautiful melodies\, this music has become an enduring foundation of the organ repertoire. \nPraised for the clarity\, rhythmic intensity\, and musical elegance of his playing\, Mr. Dettra will bring his hallmark poeticism and suave sense of expression to this beloved music\, which is rarely performed live in its entirety. \nTo purchase tickets\, click here.

SUMMARY:Tuesday Night Book Group: THE PILGRIM'S STORY: The Life and Spirituality of St. Ignatius Loyola
DESCRIPTION:Join the Tuesday Night Book Group as we read and discuss THE PILGRIM’S STORY: The Life and Spirituality of St. Ignatius Loyola by Brendan Comerford\, SJ. We invite you on the journey of learning about this Spanish Catholic priest and theologian who (with Peter Faber and Francis Xavier) founded the religious order of the Society of Jesus (aka the Jesuits). \nWhether you are a novice or an expert in Ignatian spirituality\, THE PILGRIM’S STORY satisfies with a fresh perspective and deep insight into the life of Saint Ignatius Loyola and his monumental works. \nTHE PILGRIM’S STORY goes beyond a simple biography to explain how the life of Saint Ignatius affected his Spiritual Exercises and describe how Ignatian spirituality can help each of us understand our own spiritual longings and experiences:\n\n* Part One provides an accurate\, high-energy portrait of the saint—covering critical moments in Ignatius’s life while bringing in sources both complimentary and critical.\n\n* Part Two deals specifically with Ignatius’s spirituality\, stressing the importance of having a personal experience of God\, a call for the reader as it was for the saint. The result is a realistic\, balanced view of Ignatius as well as a concise introduction to Ignatian spirituality\, the Spiritual Exercises\, and the Examen—his most important gifts to the world. \nAuthor Brendan Comerford\, SJ\, has worked as a teacher\, Jesuit novice master\, and lecturer on the history of Christian Spirituality. He is an experienced spiritual director and gives retreats regularly at the Jesuit Centre for Spirituality at Manresa in Dublin\, Ireland\, and at other retreat centers. \nTaking a lead role in our discussion of this book will be The Tuesday Night Book Group’s own Bob Giugliano\, Ph.D.\, who has been a licensed psychologist\, spiritual director\, and adjunct faculty member in the Graduate School of Religion and Religious Education at Fordham University with extensive experience in Ignatian Spirituality including leading the Spiritual Exercises. \nWe will also be asking for active participation from Book Group members\, including volunteering to help lead one or more discussions of the chapters.  To get on the emailing list to receive the Zoom link for this group\, please email TuesdayNightBookGroup@gmail.com. \nOur Schedule\nTuesday\, June 28th | Chapter 17: The Second Week — Part I \nTuesday\, July 5th | Chapter 17: The Second Week — Part II \nTuesday\, July 12th | Chapter 18: The Third Week \nTuesday\, July 19th | Chapter 19: The Fourth Week \nTuesday\, July 26th | Chapter 20: Contemplation to Attain Love \nTuesday\, August 2nd | Chapters 21 & 22: The Discernment of Spirits and Group Discernment \nTuesday\, August 9th | Chapter 23: The Examen of Consciousness \n
