David Meconi\, who explains\, “A key fact of the Christian life that we in the 21st century have either forgotten or misunderstood [is] that Christianity is a two-act play: In the first half of the story\, God becomes human. But that’s only the beginning. In the second half\, if you will\, we are called to become like God\, and thereby begin to live with his power and his joy\, his love\, and his mercy.” \nSt. Athanasius famously said that “The Son of God became man so that we might become God.” We will delve into what it means for a Christian to not only have a relationship with God but become so united with Him that we take part in his divinity. \nAuthor Fr. David V. Meconi\, SJ\, serves as Assistant Professor of Early Christianity at Saint Louis University in Missouri. He received his Ph.D. at Oxford\, writing his dissertation on St. Augustine’s thoughts on deification. SUMMARY:Tuesday Night Book Group: Saturday Midday Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Join the Tuesday Night Book Group on a Saturday Midday Field Trip to hear a one-hour talk on St. Gregory of Nyssa (335-95)\, an early influential figure who has been hailed as “the father of Christian mysticism.” Whether ascending Mount Sinai with Moses\, or the Sermon on the Mount with Jesus\, or from created things to the Transcendent Beauty with the Neo-Platonists\, this Cappadocian Father helps us encounter the “luminous darkness” of the mystery of God.  This will be followed by an optional two-hour guided meditation based on St. Gregory’s writings from 1 PM to 3 PM. \nTo register to attend and to receive a complimentary copy of the book Gregory of Nyssa: The Life of Moses\, which is considered one of the most important books in the study of Christian mysticism (and retells the story of Moses’s life from the biblical account in Exodus and Numbers\, and then refers back to these stories as the basis for profound spiritual lessons)\, email tuesdaynightbookgroup@gmail.com.
