SUMMARY:Tuesday Night Book Group |  Introduction to the Spiritual Life: Walking the Path of Prayer with Jesus by Dr. Brant Pitre
DESCRIPTION:The Tuesday Night Book Group invites you to join us every Tuesday night (7-8:15 pm) as we explore the just-released book INTRODUCTION TO THE SPIRITUAL LIFE: Walking the Path of Prayer with Jesus by Dr. Brant Pitre. \n  \nThe path of following Jesus is an ancient and storied spiritual tradition. Yet many believers are not familiar with the three major forms of prayer and the three stages of spiritual growth that exist to bring us closer to God. \nThis book draws on the riches of the Bible\, the words of Jesus\, and the writings of mystics across the centuries to shed light on the mystery—and wonder—of the spiritual life. Starting with the age-old belief that the path of prayer is not only informative but transformative\, we will explore: \n• The scriptural roots of vocal\, meditative\, and contemplative prayer\n• The purgative\, illuminative\, and unitive stages of spiritual growth\n• The spiritual exercises of prayer\, fasting\, and almsgiving\n• The Jewish roots of the Lord’s Prayer\n• Lectio Divina: how to pray with the Bible\n• Seven vices and their seven opposing virtues\n• The battle of prayer: how to deal with difficulty and distractions\n• The “dark night of the soul” in the Scriptures \nExploring sacred truths\, contemplative insights\, and practical steps\, our study of this book will present participants with a veritable biblical road map of the spiritual landscape that enables us to follow Jesus as our primary guide. \nPlease email TuesdayNightBookGroup@gmail.com to be added to the emailing list to receive the Zoom link for Tuesday discussions as well as optional supplemental handouts and videos. \n  \nTuesday\, February 8th\, 7-8:15 pm: The Tuesday Night Book Group will be discussing Dr. Brant Pitre’s book INTRODUCTION TO THE SPIRITUAL LIFE until Lent. Tonight we’ll begin our discussion of Examination of Heart (Ch. 19) and Vices & Virtues (the 7 sins and their opposing virtues). SUMMARY:Caring for the Caregiver
DESCRIPTION:Many must serve as caregivers – for elderly parents or relatives\, for grandchildren\, for partners and friends.  Because of the spiritual and emotional demands of caregiving\, burnout is an ever-present hazard. Our sessions will explore how we can engage in self-care\, set boundaries\, re-envision our role and renew our lives. (N.B. One need not be a “caregiver” to attend. This Zoom class is open to all who are interested in exploring how we can care for ourselves\, grow in compassion\, and nurture healthy relationships.) Brian B. Pinter\, Pastoral Associate\, will present and facilitate. \n\nTo RSVP\, email brianbpinter@protonmail.com.

SUMMARY:Zoom Webinar: Preparing for the Moral Life: Vulnerability\, Recognition and Conscience (Lectures at St. Ignatius)
DESCRIPTION:Click here to register for the webinar. \n\nSpeaker: Rev. James F. Keenan\, S.J. \n\nThis talk suggests that longstanding “conscience formation programs” are not all that successful unless they help us first to cultivate the capacities to be vulnerable to one another and to recognize the other\, often overlooked. My thesis is that\, until there’s vulnerability and the willingness to recognize\, there isn’t much capacity to be a person of conscience. \n\nAbout the Speaker: Internationally renowned Moral Theologian and Bioethicist\, Vice Provost for Global Engagement\, Canisius Professor and Director of The Jesuit Institute at Boston College\, Father Keenan is the author of numerous books and essays\, including Moral Wisdom: Lessons and Texts from the Catholic Tradition. \n\nClick here to register for the webinar. \n\nThe 2022 Lectures at St. Ignatius series has been generously underwritten by an anonymous donor.

SUMMARY:Lenten Discernment Series: Racial Justice
DESCRIPTION:Begins Monday\, February 7th at 7 PM on Zoom \n  \nLenten Discernment Series: Racial Justice offers an opportunity for education and theological reflection to discern ways we can work for racial justice in our daily lives through the framework of the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius. \n  \nAs a parish\, we engage in this series on racial justice because working for racial equity stems directly from our call as followers of Jesus. A man of his own culture\, Jesus encountered the Syrophoenician Woman who taught him that his ministry was for all people\, not just the people of Israel. He was able to break out of his preconceived notions shared by his cultural background. \n  \nConsequentially\, Jesus preached a message of radical inclusion and acceptance where all might be freed from chains of division and exclusion. This discernment series invites us to follow the lead of Jesus: to prayerfully consider where we are being invited to grow so that we individually and as a parish may work for racial equity. \n  \nSecondly\, the Universal Apostolic Preferences of the Society of Jesus compel us to “walk with the poor\, the outcasts of the world\, those whose dignity has been violated\, in a mission of reconciliation and justice.” Since our founding as a nation\, many racial minorities have had their dignity violated and have been deemed the outcasts of our society. To take up the call of the Society of Jesus in our own context is to work for racial equity and reconciliation. Our hope as a parish will be more equipped to do this work following this discernment series. \n  \nDiscernment: Racial Justice is sponsored by Ignatian Social Justice and will be meeting via Zoom at 7 PM: February 7th\, February 24th\, March 24th\, and April 7th. There are 43 readings that will be parsed out in groups of 10 readings for each meeting. A discussion will center around the readings with people sharing what moved them most in any of the readings. \n  \nAll are welcome to join in this Lenten Discernment series! Please email Jean Santopatre\, Ignatian Social Justice Pastoral Associate\, to be added to the Flocknote readings at santopatrej@saintignatiusloyola.org.

SUMMARY:Virtual: LME Day of Reflection
DESCRIPTION:For the first 2022 LME event\, we will welcome Helen Young\, Emmy award-winning journalist. She will highlight her documentary\, “The Nuns\, the Priests\, and the Bombs”\, which follows the work of Sister Megan Rice who was a parishioner 80 years ago. \n\nSadly\, Sister Megan passed away last October\, but remembering her legacy echoes our parish’s initiative to acknowledge the work of women parishioners that are active and engaged. Join us for this conversation and have the opportunity to watch the documentary before or after the event. \n\nIn 2012\, Sister Megan intruded into the “Fort Knox of Uranium” in Tennessee\, which contains a stockpile of nuclear weapons. Convicted of intending to endanger the national defense\, she spent about two years in prison. She devoted her life to the elimination of nuclear weapons. \n\nFor more information and to register\, click here.

SUMMARY:Parish Lenten Retreat: From Ashes to Glory
DESCRIPTION:Jogues Retreat Center | Cornwall\, New York \nThis year’s Lent can be different. It will take an openness to God’s grace\, a deep desire to receive what is being offered us\, and a few signs and symbols to help us stay focused. \nThe retreat will be a blend of silent and preached. There will be large chunks of time for silent prayer\, and in general\, the atmosphere will be recollected and peaceful. Three brief reflections are offered to ‘prime the pump.’With a maximum number of 15 retreatants\, there will be occasions for sharing our faith and time for the Sacrament of Reconciliation. On Saturday evening we will watch a film and have a glass of wine. We will pray Morning Prayer together\, and Sunday Mass\, followed by lunch\, will close the retreat. \nJoin us for a weekend of restful prayer in an atmosphere of hope and shared faith. \nThis parish retreat is fully subsidized by a generous donor.  \nSpaces are limited. \nFor information and to register\, contact Fr. SUMMARY:Lay Ministers' Enrichment: Spring 2022 Session
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a day of reflection and faith sharing guided by Joe Delaney\, our presenter. Joe’s many accomplishments include serving as the Chairman of the Board for the Catholic Charities of Staten Island and Chairman of the New York Development Board for Support Our Aging Religious (SOAR).\n\nOur speaker’s presentation will challenge us to reflect upon the outcome of remaining silent when our brothers are in need. The first part of the presentation asks us to contemplate “What is the cost of discipleship?” and bring us to a realization that “silence is not the answer but instead\, to listen to his voice and act upon his words.” Using the events surrounding the Vatican’s failure to publish Father John Lafarge’s findings on Nazism before the outbreak of the Second World War\, our presenter offers a sobering picture of how we failed to care for our Jewish brothers by remaining silent. \nThe second part of the presentation will highlight the changes in attitude towards antisemitism\, initiated by Pope John XXIII and continued by every Pope since\, including Pope Francis. \nFollowing the presentation\, the audience is invited to take part in faith-sharing sessions\, which will encourage us to consider how our own actions can promote the spirit of global brotherhood acclaimed in “Fratelli Tutti”. \nTo register\, please click here.

SUMMARY:Tuesday Night Book Group: Saturday Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Join the Tuesday Night Book Group on a Saturday Midday Field Trip to hear a one-hour talk on Hadewijch of Antwerp\, a 13th-century poet and mystic who knew intimately a passionate God who freely and generously invited her to share in that passion–and calls us to do the same. Such a passion involves “a transformation in which service to others\, healing\, relief\, comfort\, hope\, and forgiveness take on a radically new character. The experience of passion wounds with the fire of love and opens the door to the utter fullness of humanity in God.” \nAfter the talk on Hadewijch\, there will be an optional 1 PM to 3  PM guided meditation based on Hadewijch’s writings\, which suggest her expansive knowledge of religious figures including St. Augustine. \nTo register to attend\, and to receive details regarding the Upper East Side location plus a complimentary copy of the book REVELATIONS OF WOMEN MYSTICS: From the Middle Ages to Modern Times (which contains a chapter on Hadewijch)\, email Karen Page at tuesdaynightbookgroup@gmail.com. \nAll are welcome.

SUMMARY:Counteracting Unconscious Bias: A Workshop for Parishioners and Staff of St. Ignatius Parish
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, May 7th\, from 8 AM to 3 PM\nOptional Session to Debrief\, from 3 PM to 4 PM\nMass for Sunday at 4 PM \nIn the gospels\, Jesus challenged his contemporaries to overcome their biases toward those whom they judged to be different from themselves. That challenge of Jesus to his contemporaries is a challenge to which each of us\, as his followers\, must respond. \n\nAre we open to looking honestly at how our perceptions\, judgments\, and reactions to others who are different from us reflect unconscious biases that influence the way we speak and act toward them?\nAre we willing to acknowledge these unconscious biases at work within us and to learn strategies for overcoming them so that we treat all persons as we ourselves want to be treated?\nHow are we to follow Jesus’ commandment to love one another as He has loved us when our subconscious biases prevent us from doing so?\n\nThis day-long workshop requires a commitment from each participant: \n\nTo be open\, honest\, and respectful in sharing one’s thoughts and feelings\nTo accept that the workshop will raise issues that can be challenging and unsettling\nTo be prompt and stay for the entire workshop and not leave early.\n\nRegistration is required. Please call the Parish House or email your reservation to Fr. Hallinan\, S.J.\, by Tuesday\, May 3rd at hallinanm@saintignatiusloyola.org.  \nAbout the trainer: Antonio del Rosario has received his training as a Boal facilitator and Cornell Diversity graduate studies in Diversity\, Equity\, Inclusion\, and Belonging. He has been a consultant for almost 20 years\, working with many organizations in increasing their productivity through diverse and inclusionary practices. \nIn his workshop “Counteracting Unconscious Bias”\, participants will identify the perceptual and psychological processes that impact the way they interact with people who are demographically dissimilar from them. They will examine the psychological processes that impact decision-making within their organization and identify how they as influencers can design better work practices and help to leverage more effectively the potential among their fellow members and those in leadership positions. Antonio and his wife Cristina and their boys Lucas and Leonardo are active parishioners at St. Ignatius.
