SUMMARY:Tuesday Night Book Group: The Discernment of Spirits: An Ignatian Guide for Everyday Living by Fr. Timothy Gallagher
DESCRIPTION:“Spiritual discernment is the art of finding God’s will for us in the concrete life situations that confront us each day.  It is the link between prayer and action.” \nWhat can St. Ignatius Loyola teach us about the discernment of spirits—also called “motions of the soul” or interior movements (thoughts\, imaginings\, emotions\, inclinations\, desires\, feelings\, repulsions\, and attractions)—that lies at the very heart of Christian life? \nIn his classic book The Discernment of Spirits: An Ignatian Guide for Everyday Living\, Fr. Timothy Gallagher helps us understand the Rules and how their insights are essential for our spiritual growth today. By integrating the Rules and the experience of contemporary people\, Gallagher shows the precision\, clarity\, and insight of Ignatius’s Rules\, as well as the relevance of his thought for spiritual life. When we learn to read St. Ignatius correctly\, we discover in his remarkable words our own struggles\, joys\, and triumphs. \nThe Tuesday Night Book Group’s six-week series discussing this book is for all who desire greater awareness of God’s action in their daily spiritual lives.  This series will be led by Robert Giugliano\, Ph.D.\, a psychologist and longtime Ignatian spiritual director and adjunct faculty member at Fordham. \nWe will explore both theory and practice as embodied in St. Ignatius of Loyola’s 14 Rules for the Discernment of Spirits contained in his Spiritual Exercises\, which provide one of the clearest and most comprehensive explanations of the discernment of spirits in the Christian spiritual tradition. \nDiscussions begin at 7 PM and typically run 75-90 minutes. \nUpcoming Sessions\nTues\, Jan. 23:  Foundations and Perspective\nTues\, Jan. 30:  Discernment Definition and Foundation\, and Rules 1-4\nTues\, Feb. 6:  Rules 5-7\nTues\, Feb. 13:  Rules 8-11\nTues\, Feb. 20:  Rules 12-14\nTues\, Feb. 27:  Application of the Rules\, and Q&A \nRecommended text:  Fr. Timothy Gallagher’s The Discernment of Spirits. There will also be optional supplemental readings and video links provided. \nTo register and receive the Zoom link for this series\, please email “Discernment of Spirits” to TuesdayNightBookGroup@gmail.com.

SUMMARY:Tuesday Night Book Group: Lenten Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:As reported on the front page of The New York Times\, Lent 2023 was a time of spiritual revival across America\, whose anniversary will be celebrated at this special event in NYC.  Join the Tuesday Night Book Group on a Lenten Field Trip to attend the “Jesus in Zion” Night of Worship at St. Patrick’s Cathedral on Fifth Avenue. Registrants will receive a copy of Bishop Robert Barron’s Lenten Gospel Reflections book as we kick off Lent 2024 together in a powerful way. \nThe worship service will include lively praise & worship music by Raul Santos and the Zion Megaband and vocalists Marisel Rodriguez and Brianne Nealon. Intercessory prayer teams will pray over those who wish to receive prayer.  At 7:30 PM\, the Blessed Sacrament will be exposed with time for Adoration and formation of a “Healing Link\,” before the night ends with Benediction at 8:30 pm. \nAt Jesus in Zion\, we’ll seek to love God through praising and worshiping the Lord with all our hearts and souls and minds and strength and to love one another as Jesus has loved us.  We begin with lively praise and worship set to live music\, as “He who sings prays twice\,” as St. Augustine affirmed.  And we lift our hearts and our arms in praise as St. Paul urged us\, “Glorify God with your bodies!” \nIntercessory prayer teams will pray over those wishing to receive individual healing prayer.  As stated in John 14:12-13\,”Amen\, amen\, I say to you\, whoever believes in me will do the works that I do\, and will do greater ones than these\, because I am going to the Father. And  whatever you ask in my name\, I will do\, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son.” \nThe heart will adore what is placed before it—so during Adoration we will adore the body and blood of Jesus before our hearts and together praise the Lord of heaven and earth. \nTo the extent to which we put our hearts and souls and minds and strength into praising and worshiping the Lord in the Blessed Sacrament\, it will open up the channels through which the grace of the closing Benediction can penetrate more deeply. \nTo register to attend and to reserve a book\, please email tuesdaynightbookgroup@gmail.com.\n\nAll are welcome.

SUMMARY:A Morning of Recollection: Responding to Laudato Si’ as Missionary Disciples in Leadership
DESCRIPTION:Speakers: Nate Cortas\, S.J. & Cristofer Fernández\, OFM Conv.\nDuring this morning of recollection\, our speakers will guide us in the type of reflection Pope Francis is asking us to exercise in his call for ecological conversion. Together\, this Franciscan and Jesuit duo will offer some spiritual fertilizer for our discernment and implementation of the Laudato Si’ action platform goals. \nWhat does it mean to be missionary disciples in the Anthropocene (age of humans) and Eremocene (age of loneliness)? How does one cultivate the ecological dimension of our faith life? In what ways can we begin living out catholic ecology at home\, at the parish\, and in our communities? Where do we begin? \nContinental breakfast will be served starting at 8:30 AM. The program will commence shortly thereafter. \nTo register\, click here. Registration is required. \n  \nABOUT THE SPEAKERS \nNate Cortas\, S.J.\, is a Jesuit scholastic living in the Bronx and studying in the MA program in philosophy and society at Fordham University. As a Jesuit\, he has collaborated on several climate justice initiatives\, including work with Minnesota 350 and the Catholic Climate Covenant. He is a contributing writer at The Jesuit Post\, where he has written on Catholic perspectives on climate justice and ecospirituality. His latest project is coordinating the crafting and implementation of a Laudato Si’ Action Platform at the parish Our Lady of Mount Carmel in the Belmont neighborhood of the Bronx. \nHailing from the DC metro area\, Friar Cristofer Fernández\, OFM Conv.\, is a Conventual Franciscan of the Our Lady of the Angels (East Coast) Province.
