SUMMARY:Bringing People Together: The History and Pleasures of Our Thanksgiving Holiday
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Cathy Kaufman\nAdjunct Professor in the Food Studies Department at The New School\, specializing in food history and culture\n\nIn his October 3\, 1863 Proclamation\, President Abraham Lincoln invited all Americans to observe the last Thursday of November to praise “our beneficent God” and to pray for an end to the Civil War. This Day of Thanksgiving became a national holiday to gather together to reflect on our blessings and share in the culinary traditions surrounding this special day.  But there is a backstory to our Thanksgiving holiday and how it changed into the holiday we celebrate today. \nCome join Circle of Friends for a “Friendsgiving” as Cathy Kaufman shares with us the history and pleasures of our Thanksgiving holiday. \nA light lunch will be served. \nThe Society of St. Vincent de Paul is running a food drive in November to support the food pantry of the Church of the Ascension in East Harlem. We invite each of our attendees to bring food staples (canned goods\, tomato sauce\, dried pasta\, rice\, etc.) to the November 19 program to benefit our sister parish\, the Church of the Ascension in East Harlem. \nPre-registration is required.  To register\, email silcircleoffriends@gmail.com.

SUMMARY:Hark! The Story Behind Our Most Beloved Christmas Carols
DESCRIPTION:Christmas Carols have a centuries-old tradition. Beginning around the first century\, music began to be written celebrating Christmas and the Nativity. But\, did you know that not all Christmas Carols began as sacred music? Some Christmas Carols have their origins in pagan songs celebrating the Winter Solstice and medieval drinking songs sung in taverns. \nCome and join Circle of Friends for “Cookies & Carols” and explore the origins and backstories of some of our favorite Christmas Carols with us and Father Ricardo da Silva\, S.J.\, and our Director of Music K. Scott Warren. \nFather Ricardo da Silva\, S.J. is Associate Editor at America Media and the producer of the renowned podcast\, Hark!\, which airs over the four weeks of Advent and dissects a different Christmas Carol every week. On December 10th\, Father da Silva will provide a brief history of our tradition of singing Christmas Carols and explore the backstory to several beloved favorites\, including O Come\, O Come Emanuel\, Adeste Fidelis/O Come All Ye Faithful\, Hark\, the Herald Angels Sing and Silent Night as well as less familiar Christmas songs: In the Bleak Midwinter and The Huron Carol. \nFather da Silva will be joined by our very own Director of Music\, K. Scott Warren. Scott will provide musical accompaniment and lead us in singing some of the Christmas Carols. \nRegistration is required. To register\, email silcircleoffriends@gmail.com.

SUMMARY:Concert | Harvard Glee Club
DESCRIPTION:The Harvard Glee Club’s repertoire has historically drawn from the collegiate\, folk\, and sacred music of Europe and North America\, incorporating pieces dating from the Renaissance onward. This season\, the Glee Club will draw upon a variety of choral traditions\, including that of the country of Georgia for its performances. As both the bearers of Harvard’s beloved football songs and the authors of new traditions\, the Glee Club seeks each year to strike a balance between preservation and innovation. \nAn ensemble of tenor and bass voices\, the Harvard Glee Club is the oldest collegiate choir in the United States. Since their founding in 1858\, they have sought to cultivate and sustain the art of tenor-bass—traditionally men’s—choral music through regular concerts at Harvard’s Sanders Theatre as well as performances around the world\, including at Carnegie Hall\, the Kennedy Center in Washington\, DC\, Disney Concert Hall in LA\, and the Musikverein in Vienna\, Austria\, the Duomo di Firenze in Italy\, and the American Cathedral in Paris\, France. To foster the growth and vitality of tenor-bass choral repertoire\, the Glee Club has commissioned pieces from composers such as Bongani Magatyana\, Molly Joyce\, Morten Lauridsen\, Robert Kyr\, Brandon Waddles\, and Sir John Tavener. \nThis is a free concert. No tickets are needed.
