SUMMARY:Society of St. Vincent de Paul Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The Society of St. Vincent de Paul has been an active ministry at the Church of St. Ignatius Loyola since 1865. SVdP has continued serving our neighbors in need through several wars\, the Great Depression\, and the September 11th attacks. \nOur meetings begin with a prayer and spiritual reflection\, followed by an agenda of items geared toward service toward the Poor. We also build and grow in friendship by sharing updates and happenings in our lives. Please consider joining us as we serve our neighbors in need. \nSVdP meets biweekly (year-round) on Wednesdays at 7:00 PM in the Gonzaga Meeting Room at the Parish House.

SUMMARY:The Lily of Quito | Cantata on St. Mariana de Jesús de Paredes
DESCRIPTION:With the Choir of St. Ignatius Loyola and Featuring the Park Avenue Consort \nComposer and soprano Dr. Stephanie Susberich presents The Lily of Quito\, a cantata on St. Mariana de Jesús de Paredes\, the 17th-century mystic and patroness of Ecuador. A member of the Third Order of St. Francis\, Mariana is remembered for a life of devotion\, sacrifice\, and profound spiritual interiority\, and is known as the “Lily of Quito\,” a title linked to a miracle at her death. \nOriginally composed as Dr. Susberich’s doctoral dissertation\, The Lily of Quito is a large-scale work for soprano and ensemble that seeks to render the saint’s inner world through a contemporary musical language shaped by lyricism\, theology\, and emotional precision. Drawing directly from Mariana’s own words\, the work allows the saint to speak in her own voice\, giving musical form to her lived spirituality rather than a retrospective portrayal. \nThe score is held in the Victoria and Joaquín Rodrigo Archive in Madrid\, managed by the Victoria and Joaquín Rodrigo Foundation\, alongside his own oratorio on the saint\, establishing a rare historical and artistic dialogue between the two works. \nThe program situates the cantata within a broader sacred and historical context. It includes Joaquín Rodrigo’s La Despedida de Azucena from his oratorio on the same saint\, offering a rare opportunity to encounter two distinct musical interpretations of Mariana de Jesús. The Choir of St. Ignatius Loyola will also perform Juan Gutiérrez de Padilla’s Missa Ego flos campi\, along with Rodrigo’s Ave Maria\, rounding out an evening that bridges centuries of sacred expression. \nThis performance continues Dr. Susberich’s ongoing work of bringing the lives of saints into contemporary musical form\, uniting historical devotion with a distinctly present artistic voice. \nMeet the Composer talk to precede concert. Reception to follow in Wallace Hall. \nFor more information and to purchase tickets\, click here.

SUMMARY:Book Reading and Discussion | Road Trip Detour: Exploring Life’s Journey
DESCRIPTION:Former parishioner Rich Miller-Murphy shares a deeply personal story of loss\, resilience\, and the unexpected turns that can lead to a life of meaning and purpose. \nIn Road Trip Detour\, Rich reflects on a difficult period in his life marked by the deaths of his longtime partner from AIDS\, his mother from pancreatic cancer\, and his grandfather following heart surgery\, as well as serious health challenges of his own. \nAt the same time\, he was concealing his sexuality out of fear of discrimination and the possible consequences for his career. Overwhelmed by grief\, illness\, and secrecy\, Rich experienced a mental health crisis that led to two psychiatric hospitalizations. He credits the support of family\, friends\, and colleagues with helping him through those years. \nHis story ultimately became one of transformation. Later in life\, Rich married his partner in 2004\, and in 2007 they welcomed twins through a gestational carrier. \nRoad Trip Detour explores how even life’s most difficult detours can open the way to hope\, connection\, and a renewed sense of purpose—and how accepting help can sometimes change the course of a life. \nJoin us for a book reading and discussion with Rich Miller-Murphy as he reflects on his journey and the lessons he has found along the way. \nTo register\, click here.

SUMMARY:Spirituality Conversation: A Spirituality of Imperfection
DESCRIPTION:A hazard of the spiritual journey is the confusion of holiness with perfection. Many of us struggle with the temptation that we are not worthy of God’s love unless we are “good” and do everything right. \nOur conversation will explore how authentic Christian spirituality seeks to discern the movement of God within our imperfections and how we can more readily receive God’s compassion. Brian B. Pinter\, Pastoral Associate will present. \nTo RSVP\, email pinterb@nycignatius.org.
