SUMMARY:Clothing Michelangelo’s David: Sculpture as Political Power
DESCRIPTION:PRESENTER\nJohn Paoletti\, Emeritus Professor of Art History\, Wesleyan University\nMichelangelo Buonarroti (1475-1564) was in his early twenties when he was commissioned to create a statue representing the Biblical hero\, David.  He was offered a colossal block of marble which had previously been worked by two other artists and abandoned.  Michelangelo accepted the challenge and created one of the greatest masterpieces in the history of Western art. But Michelangelo’s David is unlike other depictions of this Biblical hero. What is different about Michelangelo’s depiction of David? \nSince the statue of David was first installed in the Piazza della Signoria outside the Palazzo Vecchio (town hall)\, the statue has not been without controversy. Over the centuries\, the reputation of the artist as the “Divine Michelangelo” has clouded the true meaning of his work\, most notably the David. So\, what does this statue really mean?  To whom was it addressed? Our ministry extends to\, and embraces\, the mission of the entire parish\, our home. \nEach year our ministry hosts events that aim to foster mutual respect\, compassion\, and sensitivity between our parish and the wider community on LGBT issues through education and dialogue. DESCRIPTION:The Society of St. Vincent de Paul has been an active ministry at St. Ignatius Loyola since 1865. SVdP has continued serving our neighbors in need through several wars\, the Great Depression\, and the September 11th attacks. \nOur meetings begin with a prayer and spiritual reflection\, followed by an agenda of items geared toward service toward the Poor. We also build and grow in friendship by sharing updates and happenings in our lives. Please consider joining us as we serve our neighbors in need. \nSVdP meets biweekly (year-round) on Wednesdays at 7:00 PM in the Gonzaga Meeting Room at the Parish House.
