SUMMARY:Carlos Cuartas Memorial Mass and Reception
DESCRIPTION:Carlos Cuartas died on April 1\, 2020. Because of the pandemic\, there was not a Memorial Mass and celebration of Carlos’s unique life until now. \nWe invite you to a Memorial Mass at St. Ignatius Loyola Church (980 Park Avenue\, NYC 10028) on Saturday\, October 23\, at 11:00 AM and to a reception in Wallace Hall afterward. \nAs a way of remembering Carlos\, a group of his parishioner friends\, also look forward to dedicating the Parish Lounge in honor of Carlos. Carlos knew this space well since it is the meeting place for many Parish ministries\, including the Emmaus Bereavement Group\, Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA)\, LGBT Catholics and Friends\, and the Parish Men’s Faith Group. \nOver the next few months\, the Parish Lounge will be renovated (fresh paint\, new lighting\, an improved A/V system\, etc.\, and will become the Carlos Cuartas Parish Lounge). There will be a plaque of remembrance upon entering the lounge. We invite you as parishioners\, co-ministers\, and friends of Carlos to join us in creating this renovated space to honor Carlos. \nWe hope you can come to the Mass and reception. We hope you will also consider making a donation toward this project. Your support will make the renovated Parish Lounge a room that reflects the grace and style of Carlos! \nDonations can be made online at https://ignatiusnycprd.wpengine.com/makeapayment/\, noting Cuartas Memorial in the reason for donation section\, or by sending a check to St. Ignatius Loyola\, Attn. Erin Pick\, 980 Park Avenue\, New York\, NY 10028\, noting C. Cuartas memorial on the memo line. \nKind regards\, \nBrian Bassett \nMaureen Fullam \nKenn Kern \nJohn Mancuso \nKathy Murnion

The FOP® Walk is a fundraiser for our SVdP Conference and is also a fun\, family-friendly social/community event that is great for members\, volunteers\, friends/family of all ages. Mass and lunch at Our Lady of Good Counsel will follow the Walk. However\, there are some restrictions\, as follows: \n\nALL participants in the Friends of the Poor Walk MUST wear a mask during the Mass.\nAny participants who wish to take part in the lunch after Mass MUST be vaccinated AND provide proof of vaccination.\nProof of vaccination can be emailed to svdpmembership980@gmail.com (preferred) prior to the day of the walk\, or they can show it the day of the walk.\n\nInterested participants are encouraged to register as a Walker even if they do not yet know what your plans will be on that day. SVdP also strongly encourages each of you to invite two friends to register and participate with you. \nOur Conference has chosen a team name “Walking the Walk of Faith Team”. \nHow to Register: \n– To register\, click here. \n– Next\, click on “Join this Team”. \n– You will then need to Select Beneficiary. Click on the box that says “Choose Beneficiary” and choose “St. Lawrence O’Toole (@St.Ignatius Loyola Parish)”. This step is very important. While you are not required to raise funds\, choosing our SVdP Conference as the beneficiary ensures you are counted as one of our walkers and that if you do raise any funds\, they will get to us.

SUMMARY:Tuesday Night Book Group: St. Augustine's Confessions
DESCRIPTION:Spanning the moral and the mystical\, and described “the single most compelling and attractive and fascinating book ever written by a saint” and as “an extended poetic\, passionate\, and intimate prayer\,” St. Augustine’s CONFESSIONS* will be the Tuesday Night Book Group’s final book of 2021. \nThe importance of this classic cannot be overstated.  As Bishop Robert Barron has observed\, “Prior to Augustine\, no author had ever turned his speculative gaze so intently upon his own life and interiority. Hence\, without the CONFESSIONS\, there would have been no Shakespearean soliloquies (in fact\, Augustine coined the term soliloquia); Joyce could never have written Ulysses or A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man; Freud and Jung could never have developed psychoanalysis.” \nYou have never met a man like Augustine.  For there has never been another man like Augustine — who combined fire and light\, a passionately fiery heart and a dazzlingly brilliant head\, as no mere man in history has ever done.  His notorious life before his baptism reflects his honest struggle with the faith which has given THE CONFESSIONS such timeless appeal over the past 16 centuries\, and in a way that is quintessentially modern:  introspective\, emotional\, self-doubting\, complex.  All are invited to join us on this journey to unearth this treasure chest of wisdom and insights of the heart. \nRequired Reading: \n*Participants are welcome to read and bring to our discussions any translation of THE CONFESSIONS (e.g.\, from Frank Sheed’s to any inexpensive public domain copy)\, but we are recommending the Study Edition of THE CONFESSIONS: The Works of Saint Augustine:  A Translation for the 21st Century\, translated by Sister Maria Boulding.  \nOptional Additional Reading:   \nI BURNED FOR YOUR PEACE: Augustine’s CONFESSIONS Unpacked by Peter Kreeft\, PhD  \nTHE ONE CHRIST:  St. Augustine’s Theology of Deification by David Vincent Meconi\, SJ.  \n  \nRSVP\nTo RSVP for a session\, email karenpagenyc@gmail.com or robert.giugliano@gmail.com to receive the Zoom link. All are welcome. \n  \nSchedule \nTuesday\, September 21st\, 7-8:15 pm:  The Tuesday Night Book Group will be discussing St. Augustine’s CONFESSIONS through December.  Tonight we’ll discuss key takeaways from Book I:  Augustine’s Infancy and Boyhood. \nTuesday\, September 28th\, 7-8:15 PM:  The Tuesday Night Book Group will be discussing St. Augustine’s CONFESSIONS through December.  Tonight we’ll discuss key takeaways from Book II:  Augustine’s Adolescence. \nTuesday\, October 5th\, 7-8:15 pm:  The Tuesday Night Book Group will be discussing St. Augustine’s CONFESSIONS through December.  Tonight we’ll discuss key takeaways from Book III:  Student Years at Carthage. \nTuesday\, October 12th\, 7-8:15 pm: The Tuesday Night Book Group will be discussing St. Augustine’s CONFESSIONS through December.  Tonight we’ll discuss key takeaways from Book IV:  Approaching Maturity. \nTuesday\, October 19th\, 7-8:15 pm: The Tuesday Night Book Group will be discussing St. Augustine’s CONFESSIONS through December.  Tonight we’ll discuss key takeaways from Book V:  Professional Changes\, and Continuing Religious Quest:  Augustine to Rome and Milan. \nTuesday\, October 26th\, 7-8:15 pm: The Tuesday Night Book Group will be discussing St. Augustine’s CONFESSIONS through December.  Tonight we’ll discuss key takeaways from Book VI:  Milan\, 385: Progress\, Friends\, Perplexities. \nTuesday\, November 2nd\, 7-8:15 pm: The Tuesday Night Book Group will be discussing St. Augustine’s CONFESSIONS through December.  Tonight we’ll discuss key takeaways from Book VII:  Theological Progress:  Neo-Platonism Frees Augustine’s Mind. \nTuesday\, November 9th\, 7-8:15 pm: The Tuesday Night Book Group will be discussing St. Augustine’s CONFESSIONS through December.  Tonight we’ll discuss key takeaways from Book VIII:  Augustine’s Moral Conversion. \nTuesday\, November 16th\, 7-8:15 pm: The Tuesday Night Book Group will be discussing St. Augustine’s CONFESSIONS through December.  Tonight we’ll discuss key takeaways from Book IX:  Augustine’s Mystical Experience. \nTuesday\, November 23rd\, 7-8:15 pm: The Tuesday Night Book Group will be discussing St. Augustine’s CONFESSIONS through December.  Tonight we’ll discuss key takeaways from Book X:  Recapitulation of the First Nine Books:  Memory. \nTuesday\, November 30th\, 7-8:15 pm: The Tuesday Night Book Group will be discussing St. Augustine’s CONFESSIONS through December.  Tonight we’ll discuss key takeaways from Book XI:  Reflections on Time and Eternity. \nTuesday\, December 7th\, 7-8:15 pm: The Tuesday Night Book Group will be discussing St. Augustine’s CONFESSIONS through December.  Tonight we’ll discuss key takeaways from Book XII:  Meditations on Early Genesis:  Heaven and Earth. \nTuesday\, December 14th\, 7-8:15 pm: The Tuesday Night Book Group will be discussing St. Augustine’s CONFESSIONS through December.  Tonight we’ll discuss key takeaways from Book XIII:  Finding Symbols in Genesis:  The Days of Creation\, Prophecy of the Church. \nTuesday\, December 21st\, 7 pm: The Tuesday Night Book Group will be discussing St. Augustine’s CONFESSIONS through December.  Tonight’s final discussion of key takeaways from the entire book will double as our Holiday Gathering.

SUMMARY:SVdP Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The Society of St. Vincent de Paul has been an active ministry at Saint Ignatius Loyola since 1865. SVdP has continued serving our neighbors in need through several wars\, the Great Depression\, and the September 11th attacks. In the midst of the COVID-19 lockdown\, we have continued our mission to serve those in need. \n\nOur meetings begin with a prayer and spiritual reflection\, followed by an agenda of items geared toward service toward the Poor. We also build and grow in friendship by sharing updates and happenings in our lives. Please consider joining us as we serve our neighbors in need. \n\nSVdP meets biweekly (year-round) on Wednesdays at 7:00 PM. \n\nPlease e-mail svdpmembership980@gmail.com for login information.
