SUMMARY:Counteracting Unconscious Bias: A Workshop for Parishioners and Staff of St. Ignatius Parish
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, May 7th\, from 8 AM to 3 PM\nOptional Session to Debrief\, from 3 PM to 4 PM\nMass for Sunday at 4 PM \nIn the gospels\, Jesus challenged his contemporaries to overcome their biases toward those whom they judged to be different from themselves. That challenge of Jesus to his contemporaries is a challenge to which each of us\, as his followers\, must respond. \n\nAre we open to looking honestly at how our perceptions\, judgments\, and reactions to others who are different from us reflect unconscious biases that influence the way we speak and act toward them?\nAre we willing to acknowledge these unconscious biases at work within us and to learn strategies for overcoming them so that we treat all persons as we ourselves want to be treated?\nHow are we to follow Jesus’ commandment to love one another as He has loved us when our subconscious biases prevent us from doing so?\n\nThis day-long workshop requires a commitment from each participant: \n\nTo be open\, honest\, and respectful in sharing one’s thoughts and feelings\nTo accept that the workshop will raise issues that can be challenging and unsettling\nTo be prompt and stay for the entire workshop and not leave early.\n\nRegistration is required. Please call the Parish House or email your reservation to Fr. Hallinan\, S.J.\, by Tuesday\, May 3rd at hallinanm@saintignatiusloyola.org.  \nAbout the trainer: Antonio del Rosario has received his training as a Boal facilitator and Cornell Diversity graduate studies in Diversity\, Equity\, Inclusion\, and Belonging. He has been a consultant for almost 20 years\, working with many organizations in increasing their productivity through diverse and inclusionary practices. \nIn his workshop “Counteracting Unconscious Bias”\, participants will identify the perceptual and psychological processes that impact the way they interact with people who are demographically dissimilar from them. They will examine the psychological processes that impact decision-making within their organization and identify how they as influencers can design better work practices and help to leverage more effectively the potential among their fellow members and those in leadership positions. Antonio and his wife Cristina and their boys Lucas and Leonardo are active parishioners at St. Ignatius.

SUMMARY:Tuesday Night Book Group: THE PILGRIM'S STORY: The Life and Spirituality of St. Ignatius Loyola
DESCRIPTION:Join the Tuesday Night Book Group as we read and discuss THE PILGRIM’S STORY: The Life and Spirituality of St. Ignatius Loyola by Brendan Comerford\, SJ. We invite you on the journey of learning about this Spanish Catholic priest and theologian who (with Peter Faber and Francis Xavier) founded the religious order of the Society of Jesus (aka the Jesuits). \nWhether you are a novice or an expert in Ignatian spirituality\, THE PILGRIM’S STORY satisfies with a fresh perspective and deep insight into the life of Saint Ignatius Loyola and his monumental works. \nTHE PILGRIM’S STORY goes beyond a simple biography to explain how the life of Saint Ignatius affected his Spiritual Exercises and describe how Ignatian spirituality can help each of us understand our own spiritual longings and experiences:\n\n* Part One provides an accurate\, high-energy portrait of the saint—covering critical moments in Ignatius’s life while bringing in sources both complimentary and critical.\n\n* Part Two deals specifically with Ignatius’s spirituality\, stressing the importance of having a personal experience of God\, a call for the reader as it was for the saint. The result is a realistic\, balanced view of Ignatius as well as a concise introduction to Ignatian spirituality\, the Spiritual Exercises\, and the Examen—his most important gifts to the world. \nAuthor Brendan Comerford\, SJ\, has worked as a teacher\, Jesuit novice master\, and lecturer on the history of Christian Spirituality. He is an experienced spiritual director and gives retreats regularly at the Jesuit Centre for Spirituality at Manresa in Dublin\, Ireland\, and at other retreat centers. \nTaking a lead role in our discussion of this book will be The Tuesday Night Book Group’s own Bob Giugliano\, Ph.D.\, who has been a licensed psychologist\, spiritual director\, and adjunct faculty member in the Graduate School of Religion and Religious Education at Fordham University with extensive experience in Ignatian Spirituality including leading the Spiritual Exercises. \nWe will also be asking for active participation from Book Group members\, including volunteering to help lead one or more discussions of the chapters.  To get on the emailing list to receive the Zoom link for this group\, please email TuesdayNightBookGroup@gmail.com. \nOur Schedule\nTuesday\, June 28th | Chapter 17: The Second Week — Part I \nTuesday\, July 5th | Chapter 17: The Second Week — Part II \nTuesday\, July 12th | Chapter 18: The Third Week \nTuesday\, July 19th | Chapter 19: The Fourth Week \nTuesday\, July 26th | Chapter 20: Contemplation to Attain Love \nTuesday\, August 2nd | Chapters 21 & 22: The Discernment of Spirits and Group Discernment \nTuesday\, August 9th | Chapter 23: The Examen of Consciousness \n

SUMMARY:Tuesday Night Book Group: Saturday Midday Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Join the Tuesday Night Book Group on a Saturday Midday Field Trip to hear a one-hour talk on Christian existentialist Soren Kierkegaard (1813-55). \nFor those with complicated hearts\, Kierkegaard leads to simplicity. Those asleep to what is crucial in life\, he awakens. To those who feel distant from God\, he unfolds the immediacy of Jesus Christ as one contemporaneous with us. To those aimlessly immersed in the swamp of distractions\, Kierkegaard shows how to live a meaningful existence by choosing the “One Thing Necessary.” After the noon talk\, there will be an optional 1 PM to 3 PM guided meditation to allow Kierkegaard’s writings to take us deeper into the interior life. \nTo register to attend and to receive a complimentary copy of the book The Lily of the Field and the Bird of the Air: Three Godly Discourses\, email tuesdaynightbookgroup@gmail.com.
