SUMMARY:Ukraine\, the Holy See\, and the Just War Tradition
DESCRIPTION:PRESENTER: Pavlo Smytsnyuk\nUkrainian Catholic Theologian & Fellow at Princeton University\n\nPavlo Smytsnyuk will return to St. Ignatius Loyola to offer a presentation on the subject\, Ukraine\, the Holy See and the Just War Tradition. Since the Second Vatican Council\, the Holy See has taken an increasingly strong position in rejection of war because of the devastation\, civilian casualties\, and large-scale deaths of combatants that are characteristic of modern warfare.\n\nThe war in Ukraine presents a unique challenge to the Holy See as Ukraine responds to the invasion of its territory by Russian forces. \nPavlo Smytsnyuk brings a unique perspective to this issue\, so his talk should be both timely and provocative.

SUMMARY:I Believe in Love: A Personal Retreat Based On the Teachings of St. Therese of Lisieux by Fr. Jean C.J. D’Elbee
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, November 1st to Tuesday\, January 17th at 7 PM\nOn Zoom\nThough she died at age 24\, St. Therese of Lisieux’s contributions have been so remarkable that she was named one of only 37 Doctors of the Church\, and one of only 4 women among them. At first glance\, many have made the mistake of dismissing her writings as “overly sentimental\,” but countless intellectuals (including Dorothy Day\, Thomas Merton\, Jacques Philippe\, and Edith Stein) have returned to a deeper examination of her work to deem her a warrior—“though her battles are for love by means of love\, for peace by means of peace\,” in the words of Hans Urs von Balthasar. \nLikewise\, Bishop Robert Barron began to see Therese as she was: a rather “tough cookie” who\, because humility is truth\, understood who she was in the sight of God and worked within that grace with a pragmatic directness that came to define her “Little Way”: a willingness to\, in every moment\, in every situation\, ask the central question of surrender—What is the demand of love?—and then choose it. \nA spiritual classic\, I Believe in Love has long been beloved for its wondrous distillation of the teachings of St. Therese into a reader-friendly set of 10 meditations\, and as an invaluable companion along our journey to union with God. \nAuthor Fr. Jean C.J. D’Elbee was a French priest who beautifully conveys in this book the spirit of St. Therese and her message of joyful confidence and total abandonment to the Heart of Jesus. \nThis series will be co-led by Karen Page with Robert Giugliano\, Ph.D.\, longtime psychologist\, spiritual director\, and former Fordham adjunct faculty member who wrote his master’s dissertation on St. Therese of Lisieux. \nTo receive the Zoom link for this series\, email TuesdayNightBookGroup@gmail.com. \nSCHEDULE\nTuesday\, November 1 | Conference 1: Love for Love \nTuesday\, November 8 | Conference 2: Humble Confidence \nTuesday\, November 15 | Conference 3: Unshakable Confidence \nTuesday\, November 22 | Conference 4: Abandonment to Jesus \nTuesday\, December 6 | Conference 5: Great Desires\, Humility\, and Peace \nTuesday\, December 13 | Conference 6: Fraternal Charity \nTuesday\, December 20 | Conference 7: The Apostolate \nTuesday\, January 3 | Conference 8: The Cross \nTuesday\, January 10 | Conference 9: The Eucharist \nTuesday\, January 17 | Conference 10: Jesus\, Mary\, and the Saints

SUMMARY:Concert: Scott Dettra\, organ: Cesar Franck Bicentennial—The Complete Organ Works (Part 2)
DESCRIPTION:N.P. Mander Organ Recital Series \nTHIS IS PART TWO OF TWO CONCERTS. The first half of the program will be performed in Part 1 and the second half of the program will be performed the next night in Part 2. Tickets to each part are sold separately. \nIn celebration of César Franck’s bicentennial in 2022\, American concert organist Scott Dettra will undertake an international tour of Franck’s 12 major organ works\, performed from memory in two 75-minute recitals on consecutive evenings. Franck’s organ music—arguably the most significant contribution to the repertoire after that of Bach—broke new ground and charted the course of the French Romantic organ school. Thanks to his mature harmonic language and ability to write achingly beautiful melodies\, this music has become an enduring foundation of the organ repertoire. \nPraised for the clarity\, rhythmic intensity\, and musical elegance of his playing\, Mr. Dettra will bring his hallmark poeticism and suave sense of expression to this beloved music\, which is rarely performed live in its entirety. \nTo purchase tickets\, click here.

SUMMARY:Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Reservation: Y National Service Project
DESCRIPTION:Please join Ignatian Social Justice and the National Y in an inaugural Mission Immersion to build a strong community on the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Reservation! \nThe construction of a new cluster of tiny homes will enable families\, volunteers\, and staff inhabiting the homes to achieve the stability\, independence\, and strength they need to build a more healthy and vibrant community. Immerse yourself in a Lakota Tribe cultural exchange. The group size is about 10 – 20 volunteers per trip (or wave). \nAll service trips include a mix of work\, rest\, and free time. Volunteering on this project is fun\, fast-paced\, and fulfilling. The Sioux YMCA tiny home project not only utilizes your skills and effort to build safe\, affordable homes that are desperately needed on the reservation but also offers an opportunity to become educated in American Indian culture. \nA site-seeing trip is included to experience the incredible Badlands National Park\, Custer State Park\, Black Hills\, Crazy Horse Monument\, and more! We welcome everyone who wants to contribute to this important National Service Project. Previous construction experience is not required\, however manual labor is a part of the trip\, so all participants should be in good health. A COVID vaccine is required. \nCOST AND LODGING: $375/week\nThis fee includes meals in the dining hall\, lodging in the volunteer center bunkhouse\, cultural activities and tours\, training\, a final awards banquet\, and airport shuttles from Rapid City\, Soth Dakota. Lodging for this option is a lower bunk (upper bunk not used) with shared bathrooms. Just like (but more fun than) going to Camp for a week. The cost does not include your airfare to Rapid City\, South Dakota.\nOR\n$175/week – If you arrange for your own lodging. This fee includes meals in the dining hall\, cultural activities and tours\, training\, a final awards banquet\, and airport shuttles from Rapid City\, South Dakota. SUMMARY:Film Screening: Monsieur Vincent
DESCRIPTION:Sponsored by Lay Ministers’ Enrichment and The Society of St. Vicent de Paul\n  \n6:30 PM – 7 PM: Reception\n7 PM – 7:30 PM: Reflection on the Life of St. Vincent DePaul\n7:30 PM – 10 PM: Screening of Monsieur Vincent \nThe Lay Ministers Enrichment (LME) Ministry opens its 2022-2023 program year on Friday\, October 21st\, in Wallace Hall. The theme for this year’s program season is “Preaching the Gospel”\, based on an encyclical of Pope Francis. In their first program\, LME will join with the St. Lawrence O’Toole Conference of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul (Pattie Hughes\, President) to present a screening of the internationally acclaimed 1947 film\, Monsieur Vincent\, which received an honorary Academy Award in 1949 for Best Foreign Language film released the previous year in the United States. \nThe film\, starring Pierre Fresnay as St. Vincent de Paul\, depicts the life and ministry of Vincent de Paul\, a 17th-century French cleric\, who dedicated his ministry to “hearing the cry of the poor\,” but who also became the spiritual advisor to the Queen of France and the nobility. \nBorn into poverty\, Vincent de Paul entered the seminary when his family sold their oxen to pay his tuition. Early in his ministry\, he dedicated himself to “hearing the cry of the poor” and ministering to the poor\, including imprisoned galley slaves on French military ships. St. Vincent de Paul enlisted wealthy Parisian women\, including the Gondi family\, to financially support his ministry in providing food\, shelter\, and clothing\, missionary projects\, and establishing hospitals\, ultimately\, with Louise de Marillac\, founding the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul. \nA review of the 1947 film describes St. Vincent’s calling to a life dedicated to those living in poverty: \nMonsieur Vincent celebrates the saint’s single-minded devotion to the poor without romanticizing the objects of his devotion and the recipients of his charity. Vincent himself\, though he urges his followers to regard the poor as their masters\, admits frankly that they are “masters who are terribly insensitive and demanding… dirty and ugly… unjust and foul-mouthed.” Yet he is adamant that\, the harder they are to serve\, “the more you will have to love them.” \nJoin LME and the Society of St. Vincent de Paul for an evening of fellowship and reflection on how we\, as Catholics\, can “preach the Gospel” through “loving the poor.” \nTo register\, click here. \nThe registration deadline is Monday\, October 17th.

SUMMARY:Tuesday Night Book Group: Saturday Midday Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Join the Tuesday Night Book Group on a Saturday Midday Field Trip to hear a one-hour talk on St. Gregory of Nyssa (335-95)\, an early influential figure who has been hailed as “the father of Christian mysticism.” Whether ascending Mount Sinai with Moses\, or the Sermon on the Mount with Jesus\, or from created things to the Transcendent Beauty with the Neo-Platonists\, this Cappadocian Father helps us encounter the “luminous darkness” of the mystery of God.  This will be followed by an optional two-hour guided meditation based on St. Gregory’s writings from 1 PM to 3 PM. \nTo register to attend and to receive a complimentary copy of the book Gregory of Nyssa: The Life of Moses\, which is considered one of the most important books in the study of Christian mysticism (and retells the story of Moses’s life from the biblical account in Exodus and Numbers\, and then refers back to these stories as the basis for profound spiritual lessons)\, email tuesdaynightbookgroup@gmail.com.
