The whole program is inspired by the changing night sky\, whether through the lens of space travel with music from Hans Zimmer’s Score to Interstellar\, or through the world of dreams with Debussy’s Clair de Lune. Above all\, we will be exploring the capacity of the organ to act as a storyteller\, its many voices narrating stories in vivid technicolor. DESCRIPTION:Westminster Cathedral Choir\, London\nSimon Johnson\, Director \nWestminster Cathedral Choir is widely considered to be one of the finest choirs in the world. Since its foundation in 1901\, it has occupied a unique and enviable position at the forefront of English church music\, not least because of the ground-breaking work of its first Master of Music\, Sir Richard Terry\, who revived the great works of the English and continental Renaissance composers. \nThe choir’s fame grew under Terry as it presented this forgotten music\, transforming attitudes to the repertoire. Innovation continued under George Malcolm who pioneered the development of the choir’s sound along continental lines\, resulting in a choir that was truly revolutionary in both what and how it sang. The choir continues these traditions today\, and it remains the only Catholic Cathedral choir in the world to sing daily Mass and Vespers. More recent holders of the post have included Colin Mawby\, Stephen Cleobury\, David Hill\, James O’Donnell\, and Martin Baker. SUMMARY:Clothing Michelangelo’s David: Sculpture as Political Power
DESCRIPTION:PRESENTER\nJohn Paoletti\, Emeritus Professor of Art History\, Wesleyan University\nMichelangelo Buonarroti (1475-1564) was in his early twenties when he was commissioned to create a statue representing the Biblical hero\, David.  He was offered a colossal block of marble which had previously been worked by two other artists and abandoned.  Michelangelo accepted the challenge and created one of the greatest masterpieces in the history of Western art. But Michelangelo’s David is unlike other depictions of this Biblical hero. What is different about Michelangelo’s depiction of David? \nSince the statue of David was first installed in the Piazza della Signoria outside the Palazzo Vecchio (town hall)\, the statue has not been without controversy. Over the centuries\, the reputation of the artist as the “Divine Michelangelo” has clouded the true meaning of his work\, most notably the David. So\, what does this statue really mean?  To whom was it addressed?
