SUMMARY:Tuesday Night Book Group | Saturday Midday Retreat: Talk on Saint Padre Pio
DESCRIPTION:Join members of the Tuesday Night Book Group on a Saturday Midday Retreat in Manhattan to hear a one-hour talk on Saint Padre Pio (1887-1968)\, the Italian Franciscan Capuchin friar\, priest\, and mystic famous for his balance of compassion and “tough love\,” and for his insistence on hope-filled prayer\, passionate love of the Eucharist\, and devoted hearing of Confessions for many hours a day. In addition to the stigmata\, other miraculous gifts attributed to him include healing and the reading of souls. \nAt 1 PM\, we will be led in a guided meditation based on passages from Saint Pio’s writings. At 3 PM\, there will be an informal social hour with light refreshments. This day of retreat will help us to remember Padre Pio’s advice: “Pray\, hope\, and don’t worry. Worry is useless. God is merciful and will hear your prayer.” \n\nTo register to attend (there is no cost) and to receive details\, please email “Padre Pio Retreat” to tuesdaynightbookgroup@gmail.com.

SUMMARY:Tuesday Night Book Group: Saturday Midday Retreat
DESCRIPTION:Join the Tuesday Night Book Group on a Saturday Midday Retreat in Manhattan to hear two 30-minute talks on The Union of the Intellect and the Heart by Fr. James Brent (Ph.D.\, St. Louis University) of the Thomistic Institute’s popular “Aquinas 101” series and Fr. Bruno Shah (Ph.D.\, Notre Dame) of Providence College.  From 1-3 PM\, we will be led in a guided meditation before the Blessed Sacrament.  \nThere’s a dimension of prayer life\, of our hearts\, that lies hidden and secret\, perhaps even to ourselves. It is our original solitude—that intimate private consciousness between God and the individual. \nIn his humanity\, the Lord Jesus must have himself experienced this secret core to his spiritual life and sacred heart. He would often retreat to a private place to pray to the Father\, so when he teaches us how to pray\, it really is an amazing revelation! He’s letting us in on the secret of his trinitarian life. He’s revealing the heart of his absolute trust in the Father\, a human trust that is at the same time perfectly energized by his own eternal divinity. \nDuring our Retreat\, may the secret of our spiritual identity hidden with Christ in God be discerned and deepened through the spirit of prayer\, and may his Spirit anoint us to pray as Jesus taught us so that our heavenly Father’s kingdom expands into our hearts. \nTo register to attend (there is no cost) and to receive details (please note that we will be meeting off-site)\, please email “August 19th Retreat” to tuesdaynightbookgroup@gmail.com.\n\nAll are welcome.

SUMMARY:The Ultimate (Catholic!) Insider’s Guide to the Metropolitan Museum of Art: Part II
DESCRIPTION:All parishioners and their guests are invited to join us for Part II of this inspiring journey through the past 5000 years of humanity’s search for God through art\, guided by authors Steve and Evelyn Auth\, who—over the past decade—have led art lovers on their unique faith-based tour of 65 masterpieces on display at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. \nDiscovering that art attracts people to faith\, their book PILGRIMAGE TO THE MUSEUM: Man’s Search for God Through Art and Time brings their insider’s tour to all.  Last fall’s event drew nearly 150 guests to Wallace Hall\, and the Auths are back to lead us through a whole new set of masterpieces in their presentation “Encounter | Communion | Transformation: The Eucharist in Art.” \nTheir talk and slide presentation will take us on a provocative and colorful journey through masterpieces by the likes of Caravaggio\, Dali\, El Greco\, Giotto\, Hopper\, Picasso\, and Rembrandt\, including the paintings “Christ Healing the Blind Man\,” “Supper at Emmaus\,” “Opening of the Fifth Seal\,” and the sculpture of St. Teresa in Ecstasy\, which explore notions of spiritual communion and union. \nThe Auths will share the highs and lows of our determined quest through masterpieces that allow us to encounter the profound truths that lead many along the path to union with God. \nA limited number of copies of PILGRIMAGE TO THE MUSEUM will be available at the event\, or you are welcome to bring your own copies to be signed by the authors at the reception to follow. \nSteve\, a graduate of Princeton and the Harvard Business School\, is also the author of THE MISSIONARY OF WALL STREET: From Managing Money to Saving Souls on the Streets of New York\, about the sidewalk mission he and Evelyn run\, which has distributed tens of thousands of Rosaries outside St. Patrick’s Cathedral and the Basilica of St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral in Manhattan\, resulting in countless reversions and conversions to faith.   \nTo register\, email TuesdayNightBookGroup@gmail.com.

SUMMARY:Concert: The Choir of Notre Dame Cathedral\, Paris\, France
DESCRIPTION:From the earliest times\, music has been an integral part of the life of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. While the pointed arches of the new gothic style rose up to the heavens to form the chancel\, the new Notre Dame Choir School\, with its magnificent polyphony\, was born. The voices of the choristers responded in virtuosity to that of the builders. Since that time\, the musical tradition at Notre Dame has been upheld to the highest degree\, and each generation\, in turn\, has added a stone to the prestigious edifice\, which is that of the Cathedral’s musical history. \nTo purchase tickets\, click here.

SUMMARY:Tuesday Night Book Group: C.S. Lewis and the Doctrine of Deification
DESCRIPTION:During his September 2023 talk at Harvard University\, Bishop Robert Barron was asked about the Christian process of divinization (or deification\, and known in the Orthodox tradition as theosis)\, and told the crowd that his remarks could be summed up in the simple words of St. Irenaeus: “The glory of God is a human being fully alive.” \nChris Jensen’s luminous essay “Shine As the Sun:  C.S. Lewis and the Doctrine of Deification”—which was first presented at the C.S. Lewis Summer Institute at Oxford University\, and can be found online at cslewis.org—expands on Lewis’s insights into this inward process of transformation experienced within the life of the Church and leading to mystical union with God. \nNote: Chris Jensen will be joining us for the October 24th meeting. \nJoin the Tuesday Night Book Group as they read and discuss Jensen’s essay and C.S. Lewis’s beliefs regarding deification and Lewis’s personal spiritual practices which included prayer (esp. the Psalms and daily lectio divina on the New Testament)\, fasting\, receiving spiritual direction\, and the sacraments—especially the Eucharist. Lewis wrote that our destiny in life is either to be like God—or to be miserable; there is no middle way: “If we will not learn to eat the only food that the universe grows…then we must starve eternally.” \nOptional supplemental reading includes Paragraph 2014 of the Catechism of the Catholic Church; Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis; and With All the Fullness of God: Deification in Christian Tradition\, edited by Jared Ortiz. \nAll are welcome. To receive the new Zoom link for this series\, RSVP with the subject line “C.S. Lewis” to tuesdaynightbookgroup@gmail.com.

SUMMARY:Tuesday Night Book Group: More Than You Could Ever Imagine: A Catholic Perspective on Deification
DESCRIPTION:“That creation itself would be set free from slavery to corruption and share in the glorious freedom of the children of God.”\n–Romans 8:21 \nOn the heels of last week’s discussion on C.S. Lewis and the Doctrine of Deification\, tonight\, the Tuesday Night Book Group considers the perspective of Bernie Owens\, SJ\, as we ask ourselves:  What does this sacred process look like in daily life? How might we best help each other realize this glorious\, awesome destiny that is ours?   \nThis week\, we’ll examine the specific experiences essential to our journey to being deified\, also called being transformed in Christ or divinized.   The article we’ll discuss draws extensively from the biblical themes that are the basis of the meditations and contemplations in the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola. \nAll are welcome. To receive a .pdf of the article we’ll be discussing along with the new Zoom link for this series\, RSVP with the subject line “10/31” to tuesdaynightbookgroup@gmail.com.

SUMMARY:Tuesday Night Book Group: The Surprising Rebirth of Belief in God
DESCRIPTION:A longtime atheist psychologist cited as “the most influential public intellectual in the Western world” has also been called “the person most responsible for reintroducing God and the Bible into mainstream secular culture today\,” prompting many to leave behind secularism and reconsider Christianity. Other high-profile conversions (including atheist-turned-Catholic standup comic Jen Fulwiler and actor Matthew Perry\, whose memoir featured his heartfelt account of a mystical encounter with God)\, not to mention peer-reviewed medical studies of near-death experiences have been bringing matters of God and the afterlife front and center. \nCould we be witnessing a return of belief in our generation? Drawing from the worlds of C.S. Lewis\, contemporary culture\, consciousness\, philosophy\, poetry\, science\, and technology\, as well as from 15 years of interviews as a popular radio and podcast host\, author Justin Brierley argues a resounding “yes”—stating that “the church needs to be a place of countercultural grace in a polarized\, moralistic\, and unforgiving society.” \nJoin the Tuesday Night Book Group in reading and discussing Brierley’s new book The Surprising Rebirth of Belief in God: Why New Atheism Grew Old and Secular Thinkers are Considering Christianity Again\, which Bishop Barron deemed “excellent” in announcing plans for a series of YouTube talks on the book\, which promises to provide “food for thought” with loved ones at Thanksgiving and Christmas gatherings. \nAs the discussion of each chapter is self-contained\, everyone is welcome and free to join at any time for one or more sessions of this series. \nUpcoming Sessions: \nTuesday\, November 7th | The Rise and Fall of New Atheism (discussion of chapter + linked video)\nTuesday\, November 14th | The New Conversation on God\nTuesday\, November 21st | Shaped by the Christian Story\nTuesday\, November 28th | Rediscovering the Bible\nTuesday\, December 5th | The Alternative Story of Science\nTuesday\, December 12th | Mind\, Meaning\, and the Materialists\nTuesday\, December 19th | The Surprising Rebirth of Belief in God \nOptional Supplemental Reading: Yes\, There is a God by John Bergsma\, Ph.D.\, and Science at the Doorstep to God: Science and Reason in Support of God\, the Soul\, and Life After Death by Fr.
