DESCRIPTION:Join the Choir of Merton College\, Oxford for a program of music celebrating the English Choral tradition at its finest. Works by Tallis\, Gibbons and Bairstow trace the flourishing of Anglican choral music across the centuries\, culminating in contemporary works by living composers commissioned by this forward-looking choir. The choir also marks the 25th anniversary of 9/11 with a performance of Herbert Howells’ masterpiece Take him\, Earth\, for cherishing\, written in 1963 in memory of John F. Kennedy. \nThe Choir of Merton College is Oxford’s premier mixed-voice choir and has gained an international reputation through its tours\, recordings and broadcasts. In 2020\, the choir won the award for best choral album at the BBC Music Magazine Awards\, and many of its recordings have been named ‘Editor’s Choice’ by Gramophone magazine. The choir recently completed a residency with the Britten Sinfonia which included concerts in London’s Barbican and recordings and broadcasts for BBC Radio 3. \nChoir of Merton College\, Oxford University\nBenjamin Nicholas\, conductor\nFrançois Cloete\, organ \n“You can’t deny the fervour of the Choir of Merton College\, Oxford\, and their director Benjamin Nicholas. For as long as the recording lasted\, all was right with the world.” The Times \nDescribed by Gramophone as “one of the UK’s finest choral ensembles”\, the Choir of Merton College is known as one of the most exciting University choirs in the UK. In addition to singing in the thirteenth century Chapel during term\, an extensive touring schedule has seen the choir perform in the USA\, Hong Kong\, Singapore\, France\, Germany\, Italy\, Denmark and Sweden. In 2016\, the choir sang the first Anglican service in St Peter’s Basilica\, Rome\, which was broadcast on BBC Radio 3. Merton College Choir has performed with many major ensembles\, including recent concerts with The King’s Singers\, the Britten Sinfonia and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. During the 2025 the Britten Sinfonia has held a residency at Merton collaborating with the choir and students in concerts\, recordings and chamber-music coaching. \nIn 2020\, the choir won the BBC Music Magazine 2020 Choral Award for its recording of Gabriel Jackson’s The Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ. Recent recordings include two volumes of English Choral Music with the Britten Sinfonia. On Good Friday\, 2023 the choir made its debut at London’s Barbican with a performance of Bach’s St John Passion. \nBenjamin Nicholas is Reed Rubin Organist & Director of Music at Merton College\, Oxford and Music Director of The Oxford Bach Choir. He has held posts at Chichester and St Paul’s Cathedrals and was Director of the Edington Music Festival. Prior to moving to Merton College\, he was Director of Tewkesbury Abbey Schola Cantorum. \nAs a conductor\, Benjamin Nicholas has appeared with the Philharmonia\, the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra\, the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and The BBC Singers\, and has premiered the works of numerous composers including Birtwistle\, Dove\, MacMillan\, McDowall\, Rutter and Weir. His recording of Elgar’s organ music was an Organists’ Review Editor’s Choice.’ \nFrançois Cloete is an organist and musicologist based in Oxford. Currently Assistant Organist at Merton College\, he plays for the College Choir’s schedule of services\, concerts\, tours\, recordings\, and broadcasts. François performs with Britain’s leading ensembles including the Philharmonia Orchestra\, Britten Sinfonia\, London Mozart Players\, and Instruments of Time and Truth. He gives organ recitals at various cathedrals across the UK and serves as accompanist to the Oxford Bach Choir. \nFrançois grew up on the island of Guernsey before receiving a bursary to attend Wells Cathedral School. He subsequently held organ scholarships at Wells Cathedral and Hereford Cathedral. Aged 19 François became a Fellow of the Royal College of Organists\, receiving three prizes for highest marks in every component of the examinations. He then read Music as Organ Scholar at Merton\, graduating with a First and receiving the Gibbs Prize for highest marks in his cohort. Upon graduating he took up the organ scholarship at Westminster Abbey\, where he played for national services in the presence of state ministers and members of the royal family. \nAlongside his post at Merton\, François pursues doctoral research under the supervision of Professor Daniel Grimley. His scholarly interests lie in the political aesthetics of musical modernism; papers on Berg and Schoenberg appear in conferences of the Royal Musicological Association. He is a recipient of the Society for Music Analysis’ Graduate Research Award and a recent MMus graduate of King’s College\, London. François’ work is funded by an Oxford-Leon E and Iris L Beghian Graduate Scholarship at Magdalen College.

Bach’s masterpiece in its complete\, uncut form at our recurring Palm Sunday concert. The St. Matthew Passion is considered one of Bach’s supreme musical achievements\, as it explores the depths of human emotion through reflective arias while shaping the dramatic narrative of Christ’s arrest\, crucifixion\, and death on the cross. The size and scope are enormous\, as it features two choirs\, two orchestras\, congregational chorales\, a Children’s Choir\, vocal soloists\, featured roles of the Evangelist (Brian Giebler)\, Jesus (Enrico Lagasca)\, and Pilate\, and period-styled instruments. The music is sublimely beautiful\, ornate and powerful – reflective of the Passion story itself\, and the closest piece Bach ever came to composing opera. \nIn the Jesuit spirit of education and outreach\, this special performance will engage avocational and student singers from outside the church. The talented\, avocational singers of The Greenwich Village Chamber Singers will perform the role of Choir 1\, and the advanced collegiate music students in the Hunter College Chamber Singers will perform Choir 2. Two of the parish’s volunteer choruses – The Parish Community Choir and Canticum Sacrum – will join the large-scale Hunter College Choir to perform the chorales seated in the congregation\, as would have been heard and experienced during Bach’s time. Advanced vocal soloists from Hunter will perform the arias where possible\, supplemented by professional singers from the Choir of St. Ignatius Loyola. The St. Ignatius Children’s Choirs will perform in two featured choruses in the work\, and the entire performance will be anchored by the all-professional Orchestra of St. Ignatius. \nA true community event\, this performance will mark the start of an ongoing Palm Sunday series that marks the start of Holy Week at the parish. Featuring an eclectic mix of Sea Shanties\, Broadway favorites\, patriotic\, sublime classical gems\, and\, of course\, a few surprises! – it is a special concert for the entire family! \nTHE UNITED STATES NAVAL ACADEMY GLEE CLUB is comprised of the MEN’S GLEE CLUB\, which has achieved national prominence as one of America’s premier men’s choral ensembles\, and the WOMEN’S GLEE CLUB\, which is the only all-female military choral ensemble in the world. Founded in San Francisco in 1978 by singer and musicologist Louis Botto\, Chanticleer quickly took its place as one of the most prolific recording and touring ensembles in the world\, selling over one million recordings and performing thousands of live concerts to audiences around the world. \nChanticleer’s repertoire is rooted in the renaissance\, and has continued to expand to include a wide range of classical\, gospel\, jazz\, popular music\, and a deep commitment to the commissioning of new compositions and arrangements. DESCRIPTION:Westminster Cathedral Choir\, London\nSimon Johnson\, Director \nWestminster Cathedral Choir is widely considered to be one of the finest choirs in the world. Since its foundation in 1901\, it has occupied a unique and enviable position at the forefront of English church music\, not least because of the ground-breaking work of its first Master of Music\, Sir Richard Terry\, who revived the great works of the English and continental Renaissance composers. \nThe choir’s fame grew under Terry as it presented this forgotten music\, transforming attitudes to the repertoire. Innovation continued under George Malcolm who pioneered the development of the choir’s sound along continental lines\, resulting in a choir that was truly revolutionary in both what and how it sang. The choir continues these traditions today\, and it remains the only Catholic Cathedral choir in the world to sing daily Mass and Vespers. More recent holders of the post have included Colin Mawby\, Stephen Cleobury\, David Hill\, James O’Donnell\, and Martin Baker. DESCRIPTION:“She had rightly become ‘the world’s most visible organist’.” – The New York Times \n“This rising star in classical music is fighting for more women to play an instrument which has long been considered a male occupation: the organ.” – Classic FM \nThis program brings together old and new\, situating the music of Duruflé\, Bach & Debussy alongside contemporary music by composers such as Hans Zimmer & Olivia Belli. The whole program is inspired by the changing night sky\, whether through the lens of space travel with music from Hans Zimmer’s Score to Interstellar\, or through the world of dreams with Debussy’s Clair de Lune. Above all\, we will be exploring the capacity of the organ to act as a storyteller\, its many voices narrating stories in vivid technicolor. The St. Ignatius Loyola Children’s Choirs will also play a part in this exciting concert! \nAnna Lapwood MBE is an associate artist of the Royal Albert Hall (London) and holds the position of Director of Music at Pembroke College (Cambridge). DESCRIPTION:The Harvard Glee Club’s repertoire has historically drawn from the collegiate\, folk\, and sacred music of Europe and North America\, incorporating pieces dating from the Renaissance onward. This season\, the Glee Club will draw upon a variety of choral traditions\, including that of the country of Georgia for its performances. As both the bearers of Harvard’s beloved football songs and the authors of new traditions\, the Glee Club seeks each year to strike a balance between preservation and innovation. \nAn ensemble of tenor and bass voices\, the Harvard Glee Club is the oldest collegiate choir in the United States. Since their founding in 1858\, they have sought to cultivate and sustain the art of tenor-bass—traditionally men’s—choral music through regular concerts at Harvard’s Sanders Theatre as well as performances around the world\, including at Carnegie Hall\, the Kennedy Center in Washington\, DC\, Disney Concert Hall in LA\, and the Musikverein in Vienna\, Austria\, the Duomo di Firenze in Italy\, and the American Cathedral in Paris\, France. To foster the growth and vitality of tenor-bass choral repertoire\, the Glee Club has commissioned pieces from composers such as Bongani Magatyana\, Molly Joyce\, Morten Lauridsen\, Robert Kyr\, Brandon Waddles\, and Sir John Tavener. \nThis is a free concert.
