SUMMARY:Tuesday Night Book Group: More Than You Could Ever Imagine: A Catholic Perspective on Deification
DESCRIPTION:“That creation itself would be set free from slavery to corruption and share in the glorious freedom of the children of God.”\n–Romans 8:21 \nOn the heels of last week’s discussion on C.S. Lewis and the Doctrine of Deification\, tonight\, the Tuesday Night Book Group considers the perspective of Bernie Owens\, SJ\, as we ask ourselves:  What does this sacred process look like in daily life? How might we best help each other realize this glorious\, awesome destiny that is ours?   \nThis week\, we’ll examine the specific experiences essential to our journey to being deified\, also called being transformed in Christ or divinized.   The article we’ll discuss draws extensively from the biblical themes that are the basis of the meditations and contemplations in the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola. \nAll are welcome. To receive a .pdf of the article we’ll be discussing along with the new Zoom link for this series\, RSVP with the subject line “10/31” to tuesdaynightbookgroup@gmail.com.

SUMMARY:Tuesday Night Book Group: C.S. Lewis and the Doctrine of Deification
DESCRIPTION:During his September 2023 talk at Harvard University\, Bishop Robert Barron was asked about the Christian process of divinization (or deification\, and known in the Orthodox tradition as theosis)\, and told the crowd that his remarks could be summed up in the simple words of St. Irenaeus: “The glory of God is a human being fully alive.” \nChris Jensen’s luminous essay “Shine As the Sun:  C.S. Lewis and the Doctrine of Deification”—which was first presented at the C.S. Lewis Summer Institute at Oxford University\, and can be found online at cslewis.org—expands on Lewis’s insights into this inward process of transformation experienced within the life of the Church and leading to mystical union with God. \nNote: Chris Jensen will be joining us for the October 24th meeting. \nJoin the Tuesday Night Book Group as they read and discuss Jensen’s essay and C.S. Lewis’s beliefs regarding deification and Lewis’s personal spiritual practices which included prayer (esp. the Psalms and daily lectio divina on the New Testament)\, fasting\, receiving spiritual direction\, and the sacraments—especially the Eucharist. Lewis wrote that our destiny in life is either to be like God—or to be miserable; there is no middle way: “If we will not learn to eat the only food that the universe grows…then we must starve eternally.” \nOptional supplemental reading includes Paragraph 2014 of the Catechism of the Catholic Church; Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis; and With All the Fullness of God: Deification in Christian Tradition\, edited by Jared Ortiz. \nAll are welcome. To receive the new Zoom link for this series\, RSVP with the subject line “C.S. Lewis” to tuesdaynightbookgroup@gmail.com.

SUMMARY:Tuesday Night Book Group: Saturday Midday Retreat
DESCRIPTION:Join the Tuesday Night Book Group on a Saturday Midday Retreat in Manhattan to hear two 30-minute talks on The Union of the Intellect and the Heart by Fr. James Brent (Ph.D.\, St. Louis University) of the Thomistic Institute’s popular “Aquinas 101” series and Fr. Bruno Shah (Ph.D.\, Notre Dame) of Providence College.  From 1-3 PM\, we will be led in a guided meditation before the Blessed Sacrament.  \nThere’s a dimension of prayer life\, of our hearts\, that lies hidden and secret\, perhaps even to ourselves. It is our original solitude—that intimate private consciousness between God and the individual. \nIn his humanity\, the Lord Jesus must have himself experienced this secret core to his spiritual life and sacred heart. He would often retreat to a private place to pray to the Father\, so when he teaches us how to pray\, it really is an amazing revelation! He’s letting us in on the secret of his trinitarian life. He’s revealing the heart of his absolute trust in the Father\, a human trust that is at the same time perfectly energized by his own eternal divinity. \nDuring our Retreat\, may the secret of our spiritual identity hidden with Christ in God be discerned and deepened through the spirit of prayer\, and may his Spirit anoint us to pray as Jesus taught us so that our heavenly Father’s kingdom expands into our hearts. \nTo register to attend (there is no cost) and to receive details (please note that we will be meeting off-site)\, please email “August 19th Retreat” to tuesdaynightbookgroup@gmail.com.\n\nAll are welcome.

SUMMARY:Tuesday Night Book Group: Saturday Midday Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Join the Tuesday Night Book Group on a Saturday Midday Field Trip to hear a one-hour talk on St. Therese of Lisieux (1873-1897)\, author of the perennial bestselling memoir Story of a Soul. New York Times bestselling author and happiness expert Gretchen Rubin writes\, “I had never heard of St. Therese of Lisieux\, which is like not knowing about the Beatles. She’s a superstar saint…Mother Teresa [of Calcutta] took her name from Therese.” \nMore than anyone else\, St. Therese is said to have left a decisive mark on Catholic spirituality over the past century. Though she died at age 24\, St. Therese of Lisieux’s contributions have been so remarkable that she was named one of only 37 Doctors of the Church and one of only 4 women among them. \nAt first glance\, many have made the mistake of dismissing Therese’s writings as “overly sentimental\,” but countless intellectuals—including Dorothy Day\, Thomas Merton\, Jacques Philippe\, and Edith Stein—have returned to a deeper examination of her work to deem her a warrior: “though her battles are for love by means of love\, for peace by means of peace\,” in the words of Hans Urs von Balthasar. \nLikewise\, Bishop Robert Barron reassessed her as a rather “tough cookie” who\, because humility is truth\, understood who she was in the sight of God and worked within that grace with a pragmatic directness that came to define her “Little Way”: a willingness to\, in every moment\, in every situation ask the central question of surrender—“What is the demand of love?”—and then choose it. \nAfter the Noon talk by a former Carthusian monk\, there will be an optional 1 PM to 3 PM guided meditation to allow St. Therese of Lisieux’s writings to take us deeper into the interior life and to help us walk the path of grace in trustful surrender to God’s merciful love. At 3 PM\, there will be an informal reception to enjoy eclairs—St. Therese’s favorite dessert\, which she is said to have requested on her deathbed—and Carmelite monk-roasted Mystic Monk coffee! \nTo register to attend and to receive details re: the Upper East Side location\, please email tuesdaynightbookgroup@gmail.com\, with “St. Therese” in the subject line.

SUMMARY:Tuesday Night Book Group: Sunday In-Person Lent Series
DESCRIPTION:Sundays\, February 26th\, March 19th\, March 26th & April 2nd\, from 12:15 PM to 1:15 PM \nAbandonment to the will of God is the goal of the Christian life. And yet\, surrendering everything over to God remains very difficult for the vast majority of us.  What we need to realize is that while giving ourselves over to God’s perfect will is absolutely necessary\, it’s a gradual\, step-by-step process of growth. \nJoin the Tuesday Night Book Group in person at the Parish House four Sundays during Lent after the 11 AM Masses to discuss what’s been called “The Secret of Peace and Happiness”:  Total Abandonment to God’s Will. \nWe’ll journey through this course of ten 12-to-15-minute video lessons (accessed free via ScienceOfSainthood.com) created by Matthew Leonard. \nOur study will be supplemented by select passages from two spiritual classics: Trustful Surrender to Divine Providence by Fr. Jean Baptiste Saint Jure\, SJ\, & St. Claude de la Colombiere\, SJ\, and Abandonment to Divine Providence by Fr. Jean-Pierre de Caussade\, SJ. \nRegistration is required\, as in-person participation will be limited to 15 people (who will receive free workbooks)\, but everyone can participate virtually via an online discussion group taking place every Tuesday morning during Lent at 9:30 AM. \nTo register to attend and to receive details\, please email “God’s Will” (and your preference of in-person vs. online participation) to tuesdaynightbookgroup@gmail.com. \nAll are welcome.

DESCRIPTION:Join the Tuesday Night Book Group on a Saturday Midday Field Trip to hear a one-hour talk on Hadewijch of Antwerp\, a 13th-century poet and mystic who knew intimately a passionate God who freely and generously invited her to share in that passion–and calls us to do the same. The experience of passion wounds with the fire of love and opens the door to the utter fullness of humanity in God.” \nAfter the talk on Hadewijch\, there will be an optional 1 PM to 3  PM guided meditation based on Hadewijch’s writings\, which suggest her expansive knowledge of religious figures including St. Augustine. \nTo register to attend\, and to receive details regarding the Upper East Side location plus a complimentary copy of the book REVELATIONS OF WOMEN MYSTICS: From the Middle Ages to Modern Times (which contains a chapter on Hadewijch)\, email Karen Page at tuesdaynightbookgroup@gmail.com. \nAll are welcome.

SUMMARY:Tuesday Night Book Group |  Introduction to the Spiritual Life: Walking the Path of Prayer with Jesus by Dr. Brant Pitre
DESCRIPTION:The Tuesday Night Book Group invites you to join us every Tuesday night (7-8:15 pm) as we explore the just-released book INTRODUCTION TO THE SPIRITUAL LIFE: Walking the Path of Prayer with Jesus by Dr. Brant Pitre. \n  \nThe path of following Jesus is an ancient and storied spiritual tradition. Yet many believers are not familiar with the three major forms of prayer and the three stages of spiritual growth that exist to bring us closer to God. \nThis book draws on the riches of the Bible\, the words of Jesus\, and the writings of mystics across the centuries to shed light on the mystery—and wonder—of the spiritual life. Starting with the age-old belief that the path of prayer is not only informative but transformative\, we will explore: \n• The scriptural roots of vocal\, meditative\, and contemplative prayer\n• The purgative\, illuminative\, and unitive stages of spiritual growth\n• The spiritual exercises of prayer\, fasting\, and almsgiving\n• The Jewish roots of the Lord’s Prayer\n• Lectio Divina: how to pray with the Bible\n• Seven vices and their seven opposing virtues\n• The battle of prayer: how to deal with difficulty and distractions\n• The “dark night of the soul” in the Scriptures \nExploring sacred truths\, contemplative insights\, and practical steps\, our study of this book will present participants with a veritable biblical road map of the spiritual landscape that enables us to follow Jesus as our primary guide. \nPlease email TuesdayNightBookGroup@gmail.com to be added to the emailing list to receive the Zoom link for Tuesday discussions as well as optional supplemental handouts and videos. \n  \nTuesday\, February 8th\, 7-8:15 pm: The Tuesday Night Book Group will be discussing Dr. Brant Pitre’s book INTRODUCTION TO THE SPIRITUAL LIFE until Lent.
