What can St. Ignatius Loyola teach us about the discernment of spirits—also called “motions of the soul” or interior movements (thoughts, imaginings, emotions, inclinations, desires, feelings, repulsions, and attractions)—that lies at the very heart of Christian life?
In his classic book The Discernment of Spirits: An Ignatian Guide for Everyday Living, Fr. Timothy Gallagher helps us understand the Rules and how their insights are essential for our spiritual growth today. By integrating the Rules and the experience of contemporary people, Gallagher shows the precision, clarity, and insight of Ignatius’s Rules, as well as the relevance of his thought for spiritual life. When we learn to read St. Ignatius correctly, we discover in his remarkable words our own struggles, joys, and triumphs.
The Tuesday Night Book Group’s six-week series discussing this book is for all who desire greater awareness of God’s action in their daily spiritual lives. This series will be led by Robert Giugliano, Ph.D., a psychologist and longtime Ignatian spiritual director and adjunct faculty member at Fordham.
We will explore both theory and practice as embodied in St. Ignatius of Loyola’s 14 Rules for the Discernment of Spirits contained in his Spiritual Exercises, which provide one of the clearest and most comprehensive explanations of the discernment of spirits in the Christian spiritual tradition.
Discussions begin at 7 PM and typically run 75-90 minutes.
