A Call to Faithful Citizenship

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) is concerned that some of the faithful are guided first by political affiliation, and only second by their faith. The USCCB proposes faith before politics to help lower the barrier of polarization that exists in our country today. Mainstream media and some Christian movements often reduce matters of conscience to a single binary. Yet politics is rarely simply a choice between good and evil. No candidate is ever perfect. A conscientious Catholic wrestles with complex issues, particularly those that pit one good thing against another good thing.

Understanding this tension, a 90-minute discernment opportunity will be held on how Catholic Social Teaching may inform our voting for the upcoming midterm election. It is a non-partisan discussion that  affirms civic participation as part of discipleship, grounds it in Church teaching, and builds the skill of discernment in our polarized environment.
